i've noticed a lot of posts about the necessity of pack locks... this may be a stupid question but do you use locks that require keys or combinations? thanks! Julie

key-locks are often more secure, but keys can be lost. if you memorize it, a combination is hard to misplace.

Pack Locks are a good idea, but keep in mind that these are only a deterrent for "honest people". Packs are inherently easy to break into if one is determined, due to the "soft" materials used in their construction.
Whether to use keyed or combination Padlocks is somewhat a matter of personal preference. As David mentioned, keyed locks often have more robust construction (ie: "heel & toe" locking) and therefore provide better security. Many of the smaller "travel" combination locks have light construction and with only three dials only a limited number of combinations. Therefore, these won't provide the same level of security.
I generally travel with both types(always at least one spare key for the key locks), using the combination locks for the Backpack and the keyed Locks for Hostel Lockers or Backpack.
Hope this helps. Cheers!!!

it's a lock that you slip a card into to open. no key or combination.

I've seen the "card locks" advertised in travel catalogues, and these appear to have the same "light" construction as many of the combination locks. These are basically a "keyed" lock, but use a piece of plastic as the key rather than a normal key constructed of steel or brass. If one loses the plastic key during travel, the end result is the same.
Cheers!!!
