I'm travelling with my friend to europe in Late May/Early June 2006 we were suppose to go for 3 months but our plans have changed on account of we have a friend getting married in August and my friends the maid of honor so she has to be theree to help with wedding stuff. So now we have a shorter trip planned because we've been planning forever and don't want to miss it if we don't have to. Heres what we have so far:
Fly in to London 7 days in London 5 days Dublin 5 days Amsterdam 7 days cologne 7 days prague 5 days lyon 7 days barcelona 7 days paris and then back to london
Any ideas on what kind of transportation we should take is it worth buying a rail pass or should we just fly? Thanks Jocelyne

Jocelyne, a few quick thoughts on your questions (hopefully you'll get some other replies)......
-- London to Dublin would probably be easier by budget airline (RyanAir / EasyJet - you'll probably have to travel to an "outlying" airport such as Stansted to catch your flight though) -- Dublin to Amsterdam by budget airline -- Amsterdam to Cologne via Train / Railpass -- Cologne to Prague via Train / Railpass -- Prague to Lyon via Train or budget airline -- Lyon to Barcelona via Train / Railpass -- Barcelona to Paris via Train (a long trip, perhaps 10 hours?) or budget airline
Why not use an "open jaw" flight arrangement and return home from Paris? Is there a particular reason you have to return to London?
You have lots of time to work with, so you might be able to fit a few more destinations into your Itinerary, perhaps somewhere in Italy?
Again, hopefully you'll get a few more comments. Hope this helps? Cheers!!!

Great advice, Eagle. but, i'd also suggest a flight from Köln to Praha. unless the night train is used between these cities. a train takes at least 8.5 hours. and costs as much, or more, than a 70 min flight! and, just wonering, why Köln, Jocelyne? sure, it's got that great cathedral, but i was never that enchanted by Cologne. do you have friends or family there? - d -- Cologne to Prague via Train / Railpass

David, you make a good point. My logic in suggesting Train for this portion of the trip was:
- there appears to be lots of time to work with, so time is not a factor. - the cost of the trip would be somewhat more tolerable if a Railpass was used. - it might be a nice way to see a bit of the country, rather than just seeing it from the air. - typically the budget airlines use out-of-the-way airports, which means travel time to & from the airport, also all the hassle with security, etc. Sometimes it's more of a hassle. - as there will only be a few trips by Train, a less expensive Rail pass could be purchased, which might save a few dollars. I haven't looked at the details, but perhaps a four country flex pass? I believe a supplement would be necessary for the trip to & from Prague, as I'm not sure it's included in the Eurail system?
I was also wondering why the stop in Cologne, but figured there must have been a reason for this? This was just one suggested way to accomplish all the stops that Jocelyne listed, in an efficient manner.
Cheers!!!
