i have some questions on travel insurance: 1)which ones are good, ie those that have been used by individuals here, 2) should i get a basic coverage or a comprehensive one? the trip will last about 25 days going to paris, geneva, venice, florence, and rome. the rough estimate of the total trip including air is $2750 per person. i have no experience on this matter and would like some advice. thanks!!!

Travel insurance is cheap in comparison to everything else you will be paying for on your trip and SO worth it. (Click on the travel insurance button at the top of the page to get a quote).
I have only every gotten medical in the past but baggage and cancellation, while you probably won't need them, are a good idea as well. If you need to cancel or your baggage goes missing, you'd probably be glad you did!

never bought insurance for travel in Europe. the one time i got sick and was taken by ambulance from Barcelona's train station to a hospital, <ate bad Calamari in Madrid before riding a night train> the ambulance was free and the hospital charged me *very* little for the treatments, a saline iv for hydration and some stomach calming meds included in the drip. my only complaint is that i got a prescription for more stomach calming meads, but it was a weekend so pharmacies were closed. i couldn't fill the prescription!
the hopitol bill was way lower than insurance would have been.

Insurance is so cheap though and if you are in a country like Switzerland when you get hurt/sick, you are totally screwed.
I had to use my insurance in Portugal when a cut on my foot got very infected and they had to do minor sugery and it ended up costing alot more than the insurance (because of the insurance, I got reimbursed for it all when I got home)

From an article I read:
Cost of a broken leg with no insurance: Austria £1,000 France £500 Italy £650 Switzerland £7,500 (that's $9,100 US!)

David, you got pretty lucky. What would have happened if it were something worse like e-coli, salmonella etc?
I'm entitled to free reciprocal healthcare within Europe, but I still take out a separate insurance policy. For less than £60 a year I'm covered for unlimited trips, posessions, medical, personal liability etc - it's definitely worth it. Also, the EHIC doesn't cover medical repatriation (and that can be incredibly expensive), so private cover makes even more sense.
As Kim said, once you've paid a few grand for your trip an extra $100 is fairly insignificant for peace of mind. In the long run it could end up saving you a **** load.

from this perspective, insurance might be something to pursue for my next trip.

what about mastercard's health/travel insurance ?
It only costs around $100 and it covers any trip you pay for with the credit card. I used it for a trip I made to Vietnam last year. I'm assuming for $100 it musn't cover that much however, maybe its so cheap because mastercard's has a couple million clients enrolled whereas these smaller companies would only have a couple thousand. any thoughts ?

I think the MasterCard Mosaik insurance that we can get in Canada is pretty good, but are you talking about the US or Canada? You can read the terms and see exactly what it covers.
