so i'm currently contemplating working in the UK. so i was wondering if anyone has done the working holiday before. if yes, did they register with swap or just go at i alone?
also, is it possible to get a "real" job? in my field? (environmental consulting) or will i pretty much have to do the whole bar tending, waitressing gig? i would love to be a tour guide too.
also, maybe muvver can help on this one, i'm a british citizen... got the passport and all... but i don't have the national insurance card (or whatever it is) to work. how do i go about getting one?
this is a pretty hazy idea at the moment... i'm jsut trying to get some information for the moment.

Most agencies like Bunac etc are designed for people without dual citizenship, so they sort a lot of irrelavent (for you) things out such as work permits etc. Also you can probably do better in terms of jobs available to you.
Full UK Citizenship means that all you have to do is come over here, then find a job and start working. It's pretty much as simple as that. As such, you can go for any job (assuming that your qualifications are transferable), although for most jobs you'll need a permanent UK address, so you may have to come over before you start your search.
In terms of NI, you'll get an emergency code to start with (and will be taxed accordingly - around 24% of all earnings as you don't get a personal allowance). After that the HMRC will issue you with a permanent NI number and then you'll start paying regular levels of tax (you can claim back any overpayment after the end of the fiscal year though).

i assume i could you my cousin or grandmother's address to begin with... how do i get an emergency code?

HMRC will issue you an emergency NI code probably when you start working. That said, it might be worth looking at their website (www.hmrc.gov.uk) and/or phoning them.

another question for you muvver... how easy is it to find short-term accomodation in the summer in london? like furnished (hopefully equipped...dishes etc) flat?

Hello Jules Not sure when your looking at doing this work. There is a program called IAESTE (International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience). However it's for students or recent grads so not sure if that applies and it's mostly science and engineering jobs. Jules- it's not too hard to find a furnished apartment. That said, you'll mostly have to provide your own cooking equipment etc, but you can pick that up for next to nothing in Asda/Tesco. Rents are around £120-150 a week for somewhere decent though, if not more and you'll often have a 3 month minimum term or so.
