So, I've check cheap flights to and from Munich and it doesn't look so good!

jennifer, hopefully one of the regulars will be able to provide some information for you. My knowledge of that area is a bit weak, so I can't help. From what I've heard, Eastern Europe is beginning to open up to tourism but some of the lodgings and other facilities are still a bit "spartan".
Be sure to check to find out if you need a Visa for that part of Europe.
Good luck!

I am not aware of any low cost airlines flying betwen Munich and Budapest/Prague. You could go by train with a single ticket from Munich to Budapest costing you in the range of 90-100 Euros and a ticket from Prague to Munich costing 50-90 Euros. A ticket from Cesky Krumlov to Munich should not be very much more expensive. Travel times for both trips 6-8 hours. Check out the travel planner on www.db.de where you can also buy rail tickets on line. Better prices may perhaps be available if you buy your tickets before leaving Canada.

a nice town where i spent some time, albeit too much time, was Szeged.
and, although i've never been, i've heard that Pécs is interesting.

went to Ceské Budejovice (Budweis in German) in 1990 with my parents. [the country was still Czechoslovakia!] we just weren't that impressed. it was a dirty industrial town. later learned that Václav Havel, last President of Czechoslovakia and first President of Czech Republic, had been sent to internal exile in Ceské Budejovice by the Communist government in the late 70's.
since then, it may have been cleaned up.

So, does this itinerary sound good?

looks good to me. Bratislava - Vienna could even be done via the Danube. surface ferries, and hydrofoils do that route.
is Salzburg on another trip? it's a fun city, von Trapp family & all.

Yup, another trip! Well, maybe this one, just not on this portion. I'll be in Freiburg from April to August, so I have time! We'll see where it takes me. The planning phase is more for this trip as I'll be with a friend. I can't seem to find good accomodation in Prague. It's all dorm rooms or expensive. We were thinking somewhere near 400ck per person in a double room with either double bed or 2 singles. I've found : Hostel Jednota twin private shared bathr 5 min fr center 770 breakfast/no curfew/linen Hostel Budec ip pavlova station/breakf. no curfew 770 Any other suggestions? Thanks
