It's easy enough to get flights from Athens to London, but it's very hard to get cheap flights! If you want to do that, definitely book well in advance. Also note, particularly since you'll be working in London, that sometimes there are London-based charter holidays of Greece which are a good value (I can't say what they're like personally).

here's one: www.viamare.com/venezia-lines-venice-piran.html"Venice - Piran: Approx. 4hrs" might be good if you're eager to go by boat. Going from Venice to the Istrian coast definately makes sense... I was a bit unsure of trains - that was all... do you know if you can you go directly to the coast from Venice?

Im confused... Is it hard to get flights from Athens to London? Sorry I just didnt get what you meant- going from Turkish coast to Greek island to Athens)... that could certainly work. there are daily ferries, eg. Kusadasi to Samos, to get from Turkish coast to a Greek island. both Kusadasi and Samos have been featured as worthwhile places to see in Eastern Mediterranean. there are also flights, to Athens as well. and flights from Athens to London on easyJet, Luton looks to be cheaper than Gatwick?

cher1e, I wholeheartedly second David's suggestion about visiting the Cinque Terre! I didn't mention it before as I felt that your Itinerary was complicated enough, and I wasn't sure if you had enough time to fit another stop in. It would likely take about three days, so you might have to sacrifice another stop - perhaps Milan?
You're fortunate to have family at Lago di Como! A free place to stay!!! I plan on being there in the fall if my plans work out, and it's one of the areas I'm MOST looking forward to seeing.
Again, good luck with your planning.
Cheers!!!

Lago di Como (Lake Como) is gorgeous, but just a point to consider - the town of Como that gives the lake its common name (also known as Lago Lario, but no-one calls it that) isn't actually on the lake. cher1e, I know you are visiting family in the region, but if you have the chance, the towns that are on the lake are places such as Tremezzo and Menaggio on the western side and Varenna on the eastern side. Eagle, let me know what you think when you visit there - you'll love it I'm sure. Bellagio (the town, not the casino!) is on the penninsula that juts out opposite Tremezzo.
As for Milan, yep warrants a short stop only. I find it to be the least Italian city in the country, but again family obligations will dictate the visit. Considering the release of The Da Vinci Code movie today, interest in The Last Supper in the Santa Maria della Grazie church will be even higher than normal, so book ahead for a ticket if you plan to visit it (info@santamatiadellegrazie.it or tel: +39 02 48014248). It's not the only thing to see in Milan (the Duomo is high on the list), but it's one thing that most people want to see there.
Happy planning and mapping - there are a few points here to mull over now! ;D

madam, I'll be sure to post my impressions of Lago di Como! It's one of the places I'm really looking forward to, and I've scheduled a longer stop there than some of the other places I'll be visiting. I plan on staying in Varenna and using that as a base to tour other locations (Bellagio for sure). I'm hoping to have enough time to explore Como a bit as well.
I have no doubt that it's an expensive location. Since Clooney has a house there, it must be "prime" real estate!
Cheers!!!

Alright... I've been doing a bit more research - train times, etc...
David I liked ur suggestion of Venice to Piran! I like boats and the ocean and everything =)
Does any one knoe what Bodrum is like? from what I was reading it seems nice and it is easy to get to Kos or Rhodes...
lol Cinque Terre looks like an awesome suggestion - after reading about it I'm pretty convinced! I read that you can start walking from the first town to the last (there are 5?)... Thanks =)

Bodrum's tourism site looks very enticing, no surprise there. it appears to be an entire peninsula, not just the town. the site sez it's 270 km south of Izmir, didn't you plan to visit Izmir?

is there a boat that goes from Turkey or Greece to any point in Egypt? just curious. we're gonna book an Olympic air flight from Athens to Cairo or Alexandria but if there's a boat and it's cheaper - that'd definitely be awesome
