Budapest is about 3 hours, via train, from Vienna. round trip would be 6. different people will have different opinions about this, i don't think it's worth it. Czech women are also beautiful. and i suspect many of the best looking women from Budapest moved to Vienna, where the pay is better & the living standard is higher. with just three nights, your time in Vienna is rather short as it is. i'd advise against making it shorter.
also, although you don't ask about this, it'd make more sense to skip Berlin <with just one night there, you wouldn't see much at all> and take a 90 min. flight Amsterdam - Prague. an airline i checked just now, SkyEurope.com, offers those tix for €41.40 each, after tax & fees.

As David said, Vienna is pretty similar to Budapest. That said, I way prefer Budapest over Vienna. To me there's more to see (I'm not particularly interested in art, or the Hapsburgs etc, whereas I am interested in ex Warsaw pact nations) and things are a lot cheaper there.
It's definitely worth at least one night, although you'd need about 2 or 3 nights to do the city justice.
Also I'd argue that Budapest and Prague are both completely different cities. They all have their own merits and it's definitely worth seeing both of them if you can.

I concur 100% with Muvver.....I much enjoyed Budapest over Vienna, which btw I found very expensive! Budapest still retains an 'old world' feel long gone from Vienna. Of the two...my vote goes to Hungary every time. And personally I think 3 days in Vienna is time wasted...but that's just my opinion of course. David loves it....I didn't.

Well I mentioned that if we skip out on a rail to Berlin and fly over to Prague that we could save like two days. Those days can be added to Rome or to time in Budapest. I like the sound of that better. Plus the total cost of rails/flights will drop $200 bucks! We'll see what they say (2 other guys with me). If you have any other suggestions feel free to make em!

yes, i have a different perspective from many. i really enjoy history, especially political history. <i majored in PSci & Eco for my BA> as such, Rome & Vienna are two of my favorite places in Europe. [my 1st trip to Vienna, while i was studying in Germany one year, was just a weekend and wasn't that impressive, so i didn't go back. my 2nd trip to Vienna, in mid-late 90's when an Austrian friend was awarded her Ph.D., was so impressive just i blew off plans to also visit Budapest (where i'd never been) and stayed in Vienna a full week exploring the castles, art museums & ancient buildings. finally got to Budapest 7 - 8 years later for Hungary (+ 9 other states) joining the EU. the disorganization was terrible! i'd been in Berlin for reunification in 1990 - Oct 3, also a *very* big deal, and it was much better oranized!] David loves it....I didn't.

if you've already bought the plane tix from Vienna to Rome, it'd be tough to extend your stay there - unless the tix are changeable. but if you fly to Prague and gain those days, after your visit there you could depart Prague on a night train - D375 departs Praha hl.n. station at 23.05, gets to Budapest-Keleti pu at 07:53 the next morning. just reserve beds on this night train as soon as you're confident of your departure date. [night trains can sell out, it's happened to me often, i'd discourage you from planning to buy a last minute ticket] after a few days in Budapest, catch a train to Vienna to visit there & fly to Rome.
