i noticed on kim's packing list she has laundry stuff... is it really necessary to bring detergent with us? will it be easy to buy small packets along the way? (belgium, france, italy, austria, switzerland). jules (who can't wait to leave in 8 days and is sick of her masters project)

You will definately be able to buy some in laundry mattes along the way. If you plan on doing any washing in your hostel, you may want to bring a clothes line (or piece of string) and a sink plug though. Some hostels don't allow washing in the sinks so just do it on the sly.
I would highly recommend bringing some of the little individual Shout packets though, those were great if you spilled something. Would take it right out without you having to wash the whole thing.

I brought a few of the individual pucks (I think it's Tide that makes them...if they are still available). Wrapped in packs of two. I just put a few in a ziplock bag and it lasted a long time.
