After years of helping people plan their own trips, it's finally my turn! I'll be going with a friend from work, so there will be two of us travelling. Luckily, she's not a partier, so we'll be able to hit the scenic areas/museums without her complaining about it. ;D Anyway, rough plan here: Munich (June 17 - 20) - Wombats Hostel - Confirmed 1 day to recover from flights, 2 in city and around, 1 for castles Travel to Innsbruck (June 21) Innsbruck (June 22 - 23) - Campsite Innsbruck Kranebitten - Confirmed Travel to Venice (June 24) Venice (June 25-26) - B&B Rota - Confirmed Travel to Barcelona (June 27) Barcelona (June 28 - July 1) - Kabul - Confirmed
I need to be in Barcelona on July 1st, I'm meeting my parents there for a 1 week cruise then. ;D So, thoughts? Railsaver says I can get train tickets for everything for about US$300 (though $250 is a 4 day/2 month France/Italy pass). Anyone know of a good flight from Venice to Barcelona? Any thoughts/ideas are appreciated.

so glad you're getting your trip, Doug! here are some flights: Venice Marco Polo (VCE) to Barcelona (BCN): MyAir - Vueling - WindJet - alpieagles Edit: just looked on Vueling, fare is €60 pp, inclusive. this evening flight takes less than 2 hours. the train from Venice to Barcelona takes nearly 24 hours!! or, Venice Treviso (TSF) to Gerona (GRO): Ryanair unless there's a big price savings, i'd suggest VCE to BCN. TSF and GRO are not as close to the two city centers. in Innsbruck, i stayed at Youth Hostel St.Nikolaus and at Kabul in Barcelona. have heard that there are better places in Barcelona. Innsbruck is very beautiful! there are also lots of interesting towns nearby. 2 days doesn't do it justice, really. Edit: are you planning on that night train from Innsbruck to Venice? that's less than 6 hours! i wouldn't recommend it. - d

there's a train, departs Innsbuck at about 1:30ish afternoon, gets to Venice at about 6.30 that same afternoon. about 5 hours - prolly your best bet. - d Edit: are you planning on that night train from Innsbruck to Venice? that's less than 6 hours! i wouldn't recommend it. Hey doug, great you're getting to do that trip!
Couple of things to add:
Camping Kranebitten Innsbruck - neat little campsite, not too far from the centre of town (bus stop just near entrance from memory), gets busy in Summer with lots of families (not sure if that's a good or bad thing) and people from all over Europe, great scenery. Haven't stayed there for a few years, but I'm sure it's still fine. Watch for the cheesey-but-fun theme nights too!
If that doesn't grab you, then have a look at Hotel Innbrueke which is in the centre of town, is a pretty standard Austrian hotel and has good rates.
Rota in Venice is a great location, otherwise some other suggestions are: Locanda Giovanni e Paolo (more residential palace, but only short walk to St Mark's Square), Haven Hostel (halfway between the station and St Mark's and on the Grand Canal) or Hotel Gallini (not galmourous but good location).
Innsbruck to Venice - glad to see you're taking the train during the day as the scenery on the journey is awesome. And if you felt like it, you could do a short side-trip to Verona for a few hours. It's 3hrs30 Innsbruck-Verona then 1hr30 Verona-Venice, so it might be too much travel time, but just a thought for an extra stop.
I'd go with the VCE-BCN flight David suggested, saves trekking (although not far) from Gerona to Barcelona and it's a little quicker (and easier) to get to Marco Polo airport (airport bus from Piazzale Roma near train station) than Treviso (also an airport bus, but further away).
Have a fab trip, and make sure you play shuffleboard on the deck before cocktails in the Acupulco Lounge when you're on the cruise ;D

$250 France/Italy railpass vs. €60 flight VCE -> BCN + €30 train ticket Innsbruck -> Venice. and the pass doesn't cover Innsbruck to Italian border.
unless there was another city you wanted to see along the way on the 24 hr train from Venice to Barcelona. . .

Check the ryanair offers; the ryanair airport is in Treviso, 30 minutes from Venice. Sometimes you can find really very cheap flights, maybe you could find something there! have a nice trip!

when i took a look at that, the Ryanair flight is about €24 less expensive. but, it flys from Treviso to Gerona. paying for ground transport to these more distant airports would eat away some of that €24. and there's also the time wasted in transit. . . Alright, my phone is quad-band, and I just activated Worldwide service. It'll cost me US$.99 a minute, but at least I'll have my phone. The only two electronic devices I'll need to charge are my phone and my MP3 player, and both of those are 100-240V, so all I need is a plug adapter. WHEW! Off to reserve hostels!

Doug, as Jules mentioned, texting works great during travels and I use that extensively to keep in touch with my boys.
You indicated that your phone was a quad-band, (I'm assuming you're with either T-Mobile or Cingular), and that calls will be US$0.99 per minute. I'd be interested to find out if this rate is for both incoming and outgoing calls? With many international roaming plans the incoming rate is about twice the cost of the outgoing in-country rate, due to the fact that normally incoming calls are routed through your home area. This can be an expensive proposition if you have a large number of friends who often call your mobile number. They may not be aware that you're travelling and may not consider the time difference. I'm sure you've already checked this out, but I thought I should mention it anyway.
Happy travels!!!

Thanks for the heads up Eagle, you were right. As such, my incoming calls will be turned off. ;D Hostels are booked! Friends getting us flights! Whoo hoo! Oh ya, I looked over David's info, and the a flight from Venice to Barcelona is about €60 pp and a 2 hour flight, MUCH better than the US$250 pp and 24-hour train ride. ;D

Doug,
Füssen, where the most famous castles are located, is about as far from Munich as Innsbruck. i wonder if you might be able to go one way from Munich to Füssen, then one way from Füssen to Innsbruck.
it would save some backtracking.
