Hi everyone! I have totally fallen in love with a movie "Under the tuscan sun". I know, it's only a movie, probably not even filmed in Positano, but I heard elsewhere that this town was nice.
Is it worth visiting? Can I daytrip it? If so, from where?
Thanks guys!

We spent about 5 days on the Amalfi coast a couple years ago. A day trip from Rome would really be pushing it, but it is probably doable. There is Sorrento, which is a touristy resort filled with Brits and Germans, Positano which is picture-postcard perfect and priced accordingly, Praiano, a tiny town next to Positano, Amalfi, which was my favorite, and Ravello, which is breathtakingly perched on a cliff. (Well, they're all perched on the cliffs, but Ravello is even higher than the rest of them.) My husband and sons preferred Sorrento (there was a lot to do there.) I liked Amalfi the best; it felt the most Italian and the least touristy. It was wonderful walking though that little town. We stayed two nights in Sorrento, two in Praiano and one in Amalfi. From our hotel in Praiano, we had an incredible view of Positano. We did a day trip to Pompeii, day trip to Capri, a couple beach days. The beaches are not white sugar sand beaches like you see in Florida, but they are okay. Be sure to drink some limoncello! Lemon trees are all over the place, and you'll see lots of lemons used as a motif in ceramics and other artwork.

Speaking of Italian movies, I'd love to visit that small Sicilian hilltop town in Cinema Paradiso. But as it was in the 1950s, of course. And the scene in Corleone in the Godfather was pretty charming too. But be advised, the real town of Corleone is nothing like it, not even in the 1970s when the movie was filmed. They had to film the movie in a smaller "no-name" town instead, and then call in Corleone.

Rookie, I haven't seen that movie. But have you seen Under the tuscan sun?
It's such a great movie. I was feeling depressed when I went to see it cause I had been thinking about my breakup, I related so much with her, she had great sayings to make you feel better. When my friend and I walked out, we felt revigorated and since then we always say some day we will have an old tuscan villa to ourselves...ahhhhhhhh Italy and American movies, what a great mix! I love this!

Jennifer Maybe you could rent "Only You." It was filmed in and all around Positano, also Rome and even a bit of Venice. It's kind of a funky plot, but lots of fun, and incredible scenery.

No Jen I haven't seen Under the Tuscan Sun, but as a guy big on movies, I'll put it at the top of the list. I would recommend Cinema Paradiso though. However, It's not a Hollywood movie. It's an Italian foreign film (1988) but you'll find a tape with subtitiles. The movie portrays a small Sicilian town, experiencing change from the 1940s, to the 50s, and finally to the 80s. By the time the movie reaches the 80s, the town's become just another modern urban centre. One of the great foreign films!
