Looking at that, I'd think more along the lines of budget airlines. Cork- Dublin by train/bus, then fly Dublin - Edinburgh and Edinburgh - Amsterdam. Amsterdam until Florence could be done by train (I would have thought that point to point would be cheaper than a pass for this though), before flying the rest.
Nobody definitely needs a rail pass. It's just that for some trips it can work out cheaper than buying train tickets. However, considering the prevalency of budget airlines then it's often cheaper, quicker and easier to fly rather than to take the train.

Jocelyne, once you decide where you might plane/bus, rather than train, plug the places you'll go into www.RailSaver.com it can say which pass, passes, or point-to-point tix combination would be best for you. to find cheap flights, i've used www.whichbudget.com/ hope this helps - d

While budget airlines are fun and all, when you're flying an and out of major cities (ie brussels, london) it ends up costing almost as much to get from the small far away airports as it costs to fly! i think i paid about 80$ to fly zurich-london luton but it cost be 13 pounds to get where i was staying in london. which works out to about 30$... when we landed in brussels it was expensive as well (don't remember how much) and it also took a really long time to get to downtown brussels. so these are things to consider.
