never been, but others have said the rail system in Ireland isn't that good. the buses are said to be just as good, as well as cheaper. i think this is also true of Portugal.

Between 4 or 5 big cities rail is okay. To see the countryside, get a bus pass...they are cheap....and go that way. Will get you out into the 'nether regions' and in some areas is the sole way to get there anyway. Check out bus prices and routes at Aranbus I think it is or maybe Eirebus...not sure just now of the exact name. Basically a rail pass is a true waste here. Went and googled it...it's Eirebus...link here: www.buseireann.ie/site/home/If you are only going to be there 4 days then P2P should do just fine. Really is cheap!

Yeah, it's fine with the big cities. It just gets patchy for the smaller places. It's not like alot of Europe where there is a train every 2 seconds, the schedule is a bit more far and in between. Definately don't miss your train as you might be waiting awhile!

kim- you think it is cheaper to do point to point rather than the 3-day pass for either 45 euro or 70 euro?? not sure which pass includes what, i'd have to look into it.
