Hi!
Well, I didn't really know where to post this as it has no particular meaning to Europe, but here it goes!
Just wondering of places in the U.S. you'd really suggest people to visit at least once in their lifetime?
I MIGHT, and I say MIGHT be thinking of travelling closer to home next year, trying to skip the thousand dollar flight, so I'm trying to see where I'd could maybe go!
Been to Florida, been to N.Y. and i'm not such a big fan of the heat as in L.A. or Cali or something. The heat doesn't bother me as in the desert, just not for the stars ;D

Jennifer, I have lived in California all my life and love the fact that we have the best of both worlds..the beach and the mountains. A must see in California is Yosemite Park. Photos don't do it justice. If you are coming this way, then you will want to see San Francisco as well. Just my ideas. Oma Ann

I have to agree with the San Francisco suggestion. You could even consider a San Francisco/Portland/Seattle/Vancouver (or any combination thereof) trip. I really like all of those cities.

Hi!
Well, I had been thinking about this, as I have family in Vancouver! But i'd have about only 2 weeks vacation!
Do you know if there are any cheap flights airlines from Montréal to the States?

With two weeks, you could easily do San Francisco, Vancouver, and Seattle.
This would be an ideal itinerary to "open-jaw" if that is possible. Vancouver and Seattle are easy to travel to/from by bus. For San Francisco, you really should fly there from either YVR or SEA.
As for cheap flights, I don't have any advice other than to start looking and tracking. I'm afraid Montreal might not be the ideal place to find cheap flights from. Toronto is probably better, but then you'd have to get there!
I've stayed at two hostels in San Francisco and one in Santa Cruz - all good. So feel free to ask about them if you do go.

I was going to suggest some of those same cities:
Theres lots to see in San Francisco, and it's not usually too hot. I haven't made it to Alcatraz yet, but that's on the list for my next visit. Lots of wineries fairly close in the Napa & Sonoma Valleys.
Haven't been to Portland ("City of Roses") since the '70s, but it's a nice city as well.
Seattle is one of my favourites - there's lots to see and do. Not sure what your interests are, but the Museum of Aviation at Boeing Field is fantastic. Downtown by Pioneer Square has lots to see - Aquarium, Horse Drawn Buggy tours (some of the guides have some interesting stories to tell!), Underground City tour, etc. There is a YHA Hostel downtown, close to the water, and I believe a Green Tortoise or something a few blocks from that. A bit of a "rough" area, but that doesn't bother me at all. If you need any reference material for travels in Europe, stop by Rick Steves offices in Edmonds (just north of Seattle).
And finally Vancouver, also one of my favourites especially as I live in B.C. I have lots of family in Vancouver, but don't seem to get down too much to visit lately. I've been "spoiled" by living in the Okanagan, and find that I don't tolerate the traffic and crowds as well as I used to, but it's a great place to visit.
I believe it would be possible to visit the four cities listed in a two week period, but it would have to be carefully planned. You should be able to find an "open jaw" flight somewhere to start in San Francisco and return from Vancouver?
Cheers!!!

Hum, yeah, I guess I'll see. I'd like to maybe go elsewhere then Canada! I've been to Vancouver relatively often and know that if I'll go, it won't be a real trip, it will be family visiting!
Any other cool places besides the big cities of Philadelphia, Chicago, N.Y, L.A., etc, etc!?

A bit of an oddball, and it isn't the US, but what about Mexico? It's a bit different and the airfare shouldn't be that much more expensive. Failing that something like Cuba?
One of my favourite places in the US is Naples in South West Florida though, then again you're probably not after a beach holiday.

Well, I feel like a "European" holiday in the States. I haven't seen much of the States and we are neighbors so it's quite ridiculous. But I really want to be a tourist, not a beachbum or a normal "north american".
I don't know why, but I just love it!

San Francisco is really great for meeting other tourists, and there are lots of touristy things to do. I have no problem using the time no matter how long I stay there! There are still lots of things I want to do there.

There is a Mark Twain (well known American) quote that i enjoyed about San Francisco: "The coldest Winter I ever spent was an August in San Francisco." - d Theres lots to see in San Francisco, and it's not usually too hot.

:DWell, coming from a Quebecer, I guess you know i'm used to funny temperatures! I like it being hot, but not sweaty hot while travelling and I like it being cold, but not Québec cold!

If you go to San Francisco in the summer and you want some heat, it's pretty simple. Just go inland about 10 miles or so and - presto . San Francisco has a lot of microclimates, so you can get fog in one place and sun a short distance away, etc.

The only place in the US that I am desperate to see is New Orleans. Trouble is, I've been warned by so many people to stay away (many Americans no less!) because it's so dangerous that I'm nervous to go.
