not just New Orleans, i know people who drive hundreds of extra miles just to avoid the State, Louisiana. it has the rep as America's most corrupt area. just be careful and you probably won't have any problems. The only place in the US that I am desperate to see is New Orleans. Trouble is, I've been warned by so many people to stay away (many Americans no less!) because it's so dangerous that I'm nervous to go.

New Orleans hosted the American Library Association conference a few years back and some of my friends went. They were warned by their hotels to avoid certain areas of the city and to to be extra careful in others. It really freaked them out a bit. One friend, from Boston, drove down and was advised to leave her car outside the city and take public transit in because of car jackings, theft and vandalism. That's a shame. I really want to visit. I'm not a hot climate type of girl so Florida, California, Texas...the south really holds no interest for me. But New Orleans is somewhere I really want to visit. Maybe it's the connection we have here in Nova Scotia with the Acadiens.

Hum, it probably is! I've always thought of New Orleans as a great place. I'm really surprised to hear all of this!

Nova Scotia hosted the big Acadian conference this summer and there were thousands of people here from Louisianna and I was really surprised by the stories they were telling me.
Much like what you just said David, "Visit...but be careful".

well, Louisianans have lots of Canadian blood. Canada kept the normal folks, and sent the Cajuns to Louisiana! Seriously? Wo, I didn't think it was that bad!

California doesn't have to be a hot-weather destination. San Francisco generally isn't hot, and even much of southern California does not get that hot in the winter. My daughter and I went to San Diego and Disneyland again last winter and it didn't get any hotter than about 18C (64F). I went swimming outside anyway (in a heated pool), and it was almost deserted. Now once we did go to Disneyland and there was an unexpected heat wave in September, with temperatures of up to 40C (104F). I'd never go again at that time.

I really like the New England states myself, have been a couple of times... last time, during the "fall" as you lot call it ;D
Vermont is one of my favs!
Those west cost cities look good, have only been to Los Angeles and I can't say I have any dying ambition to go back. My mother was in San Francisco a few weeks ago though, and loved it. Seattle & Portland look good too.
Chicago is a really nice city, except it was pretty cold in December!! (Hey, December is a summer month by my southern hemisphere thinking, and it never snows where I live!)

HI
I have been to new orleans twice and have had a great time. Never had any problems with vandalism or theft and we were in the french quarter every night. like anywhere else if you use common sense and stay out of obvious dangerous situations you should have no problem. New orleans is one of my favorite cities ever. There is partying for those into that as well as many historical sites and quirky tours about vampires and voodoo. The food is also great and don't forget to have coffee and bignets at the famous cafe du monde

I am a little late here, but I have to weigh in.
I didnt really dig LA, but San Fran was great. San Diego is nice they have the zoo and some beaches and stuff, but I still prefered SF.
I am a big nature lover, so I would have to go with hands down Yosemite as my fave. The Grand Canyon is nice, but it is tough to get to and overcrowded in the summer. A thought though is to do ´the grand circle tour´of the southwest. Maybe start in Las Vegas and rent a car and see the Hoover Dam, Zion and Bryce canyons and the Grand Canyon. There are some smaller sites along the way too like rainbow arch and some historical sites and four corners and stuff.
I havent seen them all. I lived in Phoenix for three years and we could only pretty much take weekend trips - which made for a lot of driving. Like I said, the Grand Canyon is nice but it can´t really make a trip all by itself unless you like to hike and get the proper permits and stuff - which is really tough. And if you do like to hike put Havasupai on your list - I never got to see that becuase the permits are hard to get, but all my friends have and say it is incredible. Zion is awesome too, I have been there. Vegas is good to see at least once even if you dont gamble - which I dont and I think it is better that way. There are all the neat casinos and shows and stuff. I saw cirqu du soliel Ó the last time I was there and it was awesome! pricey but awesome.
Ok then I have to agree with the New England states too. I have only been as far as Boston personally, but Rhode Island and Mass are nice, martha´s vineyard and cape cod.
I am dying to go to Maine and vermont though. Maybe next fall when we can drive there (and when we have no money becuase we spent it all on this current trip).

To be honest I've always wanted to go to Boston. I really have no idea why but it is really the only place in the US that I really want to see in my lifetime. I like the "old" feeling, like Philadelphia too, and some of the sites sound pretty cool. And hey, the BoSox do happen to be my team and they finally won
