Hey it's me again, and even though you've just posted that you've finished preliminary plans and I haven't looked at them yet, I'm going to mention a few more places in Wisconsin. In addition to the 12 I mentioned previously we also have Bavaria, Belgium, Luxemburg, Sparta, Scandinavia, Denmark, Germantown, and Poland. One nice route is north from Milwaukee on I-43 - less than an hour from the city right on the highway is Belgium, right on the highway. A little further north from there on the same Interstate is Denmark, also right on the highway. A few miles from there is Poland, and continuing north you get to Luxemburg. A little north of there is Brussels, in Door County.. the whole area of which is popular with tourists in good weather. And no, I don't work for the department of tourism

I love it! That is so cool, Doug. You need to do something in each place, like take a picture of the "Welcome To" sign or get a postcard or something!

paint, like I said...preliminary! ;D With all those palces in Wisconsin, I might re-route...I could come into DC from the west.....
Kim, but of course I'm gonna get stuff from each! At least a picture of the welcome to wherever sign, but I'm gonna grab postcards from wherever I can!

Now I'm curious as to what US State has the most towns named after places in Europe.
And you don't have to re-route just because I suggested WI - whether or not it would be worth going that far north might depend on whether or not one of the European ethnic festivals is being held in Milwaukee when you'd be in the area. In any case, I had fun making the list~

Not really, I mean many of these places will literally be just driving through, taking a picture of the sign, driving around a bit and then saying goodbye! So if I can route a nice little circle for the state, I might be able to do it.

Hmmm that is a thought... many of the towns are fairly close together... you could do four or five countries in three hours~

Ok, so....starting in Paris, Wisconsin, I can do this one...
Paris Denmark Poland Luxemberg Brussels Berlin Rome London
That's ~7 hours. I'd sleep over in London. It might be doable! It's only adding a day to the trip!
Edit: ARGH! Chicago is less than an hour from Paris...only one of my most favorite cities in the nation! This could be an expensive side trip after all.... ;D

More Wisconsin town names: Holland, Lisbon, Norway, Wittenberg, York, and Moscow. How many is that now? I lost track. A few of the above are too small for Mapquest but can be found on other maps or sites online. This is almost making me want to go home and travel through the state of my birth. Almost.

Yup, gotta change those plans. Family in Ohio have invited me to stay for a bit, so looks like I'm heading west! Also, new picture! Finally! I hated the previous one, that was when I was fat.

Can't I ever do anything easy? So now my friends have finally decided they "might" go with me (big change from their "I'd never roadtrip, it's to dangerous!"). Thankfully, I'm planning this one MONTHS in advance. Since 2 of them have only been to New York or Puerto Rico, it'll be an adventure for them! They want to hit places like the Grand Canyon and Mt. Rushmore, but I can't think of anything else! Niagara Falls is possible, but that's on the other side of the country. Anyone know of a good site that lists stuff like this? Or can you think of other places? I might just take them Wal-Mart camping..just to show how "dangerous" it is! OOH! Alcatraz! Why am I thinking of prisons writing this?

There are so many landmarks and sites throughout the country that it would be impossible to hit them all in one roadtrip and its probably hard to come to a consensus with a group of people. There are National Monuments (The Badlands of South Dakota, Grand Canyon), National Parks, manmade tourist spots (Golden Gate Bridge)... One suggestion for getting ideas is to find the name of a bus company... one that organizes motorcoach tours to various places. Most of the bigger companies like that do at least one cross-country trip per year - if you checked out their website you could see what places they go to and how they plan their routes. The only website I know off hand for a bus company like that is www.nationwidetravelers.com .. you might be able to find more company names in your yellow pages phone book.
