Ok, every now and then, we admins have to smack you guys around for pictures! We've got 1500 registered members here, and 30 pics of us. Does anyone else see something wrong here? David, Libby, WillTravel, and many others regs that I can't think of right now, where are your pics? ;D

Remember CT Kim? We hounded her for months about a pic! She'd had a somewhat unpleasant experience online elsewhere and was quite hesitent to allow one to be posted. Now...she sends her pics, with herself included, all the darn time! BTW....I've uploaded a goodly number of pics from her the past few weeks into our album....in France and Belgium.....if you all have not looked at it recently, give it a look for some of CT's newest additions!

Just pointing out that Maricat, who's been with us since 2003 but only "active" recently, has already sent us her pic... [pokes the regs]

Sorry, but I don't post pictures of myself anywhere on the net. Paranoid I guess.

Why paranoid? Everyone knows what I look like, my real name, and hell, most even know where exactly I live, and I've never had a problem. Come on, just one pic! ;D

Why paranoid? Everyone knows what I look like, my real name, and hell, most even know where exactly I live, and I've never had a problem. Come on, just one pic! ;D Years back, when I was in University, I ended up being stalked by a very needy guy who I chatted with on the net. This would have been in 1993/94, so the Net was really new and fun and being concerned about personal safety wasn't considered. From a posted picture he recognised me as someone he went to school with and decided I was his best friend. *shiver* It started to get really strange until I had a Prof talk with him.

Even though I'm a middle-aged male, I had some of the same concerns as Libby so was a bit reluctant to post a picture on any websites. I'm still careful about this but felt that GFE was a "safe" site so decided to make an exception. After all, guys don't get "stalked" too often (except for the case of the SFU Swim Coach a few years back - I'm sure Kim knows what I'm talking about). Technology has many benefits, but as with anything else someone always finds a way to use this in ways that weren't intended.
On a positive note, I find that having pictures of the GFE members helps to make this site a bit more personal and "friendly". It's nice to be able to "put a face to the name" especially as the Internet is so impersonal in many ways. Hopefully I'll be able to provide an updated high res. version of my photo after my next trip so that you'll all have a "fresh" picture to look at (actually, having the pictures updated on a regular basis would perhaps be a good idea?)
Cheers!!!

Long ago while it 'seemed' the Internet was friendlier and more secure.....but less control....well, that was about true. These days, if you post at all anywhere on line a simple Google search will likely bring up more info than you ever dreamed. If not...how about this site www.zabasearch.com. which is free and totally available! It lists...free of charge...every piece of property I have owned in the past 15 years, along with every old address and phone number, what high school, marriages, cars, insurance.....just type in my name. Your life story is already readily available online to anyone who chooses to look. Don't think you are annonymous...no such thing these days. Having a pic or not posted makes no difference...there is no privacy any longer with or without a picture. Your DL or passport photo is readily available if you know where to look. Buy a ticket, book a tour, get a drivers license, library card, have a checking account, register to vote, enroll in a school.........that info is on line and easy to find. Might cost $7.95 or so...but if someone is willing to pay a small fee...your life is there and if anyone doubts that...they are naive indeed. I promise that me and any net savvy pal could have your life story down to the smallest details inside of an hour flat...yours or anyones' for that matter. All it takes is a computer, net connection and less than $50! If you want 'privacy' disconnect your modem....that might help but with the rush to load up any and all databases....forget it. You and yours are an easy search/click away! Wonder how much I pay in property taxes each year? Wonder about the sq footage and floor plans of Kim's new house? How about Doug's grades in school this last semester? If you know where to look and are persistent....it's right there for you to see. so......why be paranoid about posting a pic on a family friendly board? Your own home or work computer can be hacked with ease and eveything on it quickly posted. I guarantee that while I myself can't do it...we do have at least one member who can copy your hard drive in the time it takes you to read this post. Shall we make a bet? ging

Ging, yes I agree that it's certainly possible to obtain information on just about anyone with a few "key clicks", especially if one knows where to look or is willing to pay a small fee. I suppose I was just being a bit cautious at first, but especially on this site I made an exception. This is a great site and it's sure nice to know what everone (at least those who took the time to send pictures) look like. However I still try to minimize the amount of information (including photos) that I voluntarily make available on the net.
It's possible to hack just about any computer I suppose, but hopefully by using a Router / Firewall and a Mac, this will be at least a bit more difficult than the Windows machines.
To reiterate my previous comment, what are your thoughts of having pictures updated on a reqular basis?
Cheers!!!

I like the idea of annual updates Eagle...and will offer up my slightly 'larger' pic as a first....upload as soon as I finish here. Okay.....let's be kind to those of us getting older over the years! ;D As for security....I have a router, 3 firewalls, several spyware/security programs running all the damn time. My son.....the 'puter guy...admins my system from his and is super security alert. Nevertheless......nothing is really secure. Hell, if someone can hack the Pentagon or top of the line Banking systems...my little home system is no challenge at all. My point is.....THERE IS NO SECURITY if you are online. The average preteen might be discouraged, but if someone wants your info, you are not going to prevent it. And posting a pic? So minimal as to be laughable in it's concern. That was my point. Knowing my entire system/life is right there to see......hey, welcome to today's world. Want to keep secrets? Never connect to a modem, keep your money under a mattress, and live in a cave. Even that, in today's world, will likely be unable to keep you anonymous! So......I'm off to post an update! How about the rest of you? ging ,,,,,and my up to date photo is there!.......expecting to get loads of new pics in my inbox soon!
