Is it smarter to take TC in american dollars or in euros? I'm leaning towards taking them in euros - is that the right thing to do?

That's how much we took as well-we took US TC's but that was before the Euro. We didn't use them but it's a good idea as far as a backup plan.
Remember if you do use them to record the number and when and where you use them on the sheet that they give you. Keep this separate from your TC's. That is what you will need if they get stolen (as my friends did in Australia when we backpacked there years back).

Pam, If you don't plan to use the traveler's checks except in an emergency, they would be better in your own currency. that way you'd get all the value of unused checks back at the end, when you cash them at home. any place that would cash your tc's in europe can also convert from $'s to euro. besides, your "emergency" might be in UK, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, or someplace east, no? if you buy euro tc's, you'd pay a fee to exchange into euros when you buy them, and again when you cash them at home, into your own currency. the difference is just a few bucks, but why give that to the bank? - a poor cheapskate

Good point..agree with that! The more you change it, the more you lose.
Actually, just had a thought... that would mean you would be buying Canadian TC's.. I wouldn't really want to do that, you might have a problem changing them.
Good ole Canadian currency!

AmEx is the best. You'll find their offices in all the major cities, and they'll cash their own cheques with no commision. Also, they should be easy to replace. I would prefer Euro TC. You can pay with them in all Euro countries. Also take UK Pounds and Swiss Francs if you go to these countries.

re: what Kim sez - is it really that hard to change Cnd$? Canada produces *lots* of tourists, it seems that exchange places would get plenty of tc's in your currency. it shocks me that it'd be a problem for you.

Oh yeah, outside the US and Canada-no one really has a clue about Canadian currency!
Even the banks suggest US TC's..quite funny, actually!

So, you'd have to pay a fee to convert to a different currency anyway? In that case, get the euros! they'd be the dominant tender in europe, i'd think. (my advice to use $'s was to avoid fees. if you'd pay them anyway, get the euros)

If you buy TCs quoted in US$ in Canada and cash them in Europe you make 2 currency conversions. That would cost you more than just one conversion! It makes no difference if you cash US$ or CAN$ in Europe, so why should you buy US$? That's the worst thing to do IMHO!

You have nothing to do with USD or CAD or AUD or Euro or GBP or CHF or JPY in Thailand, except to keep them or cash them into Bhats! What's the difference? If you already have US$ TCs, just keep them!

I think I got everyone confused as I thought you were still at school in Canada..sorry 'bout that!
Your US TC's will be perfect.
I think we are all in agreement on that one!
