I am planning a three month trip this May from Athens to Dublin. I want to hit most of the western countries on my way, and would like to save money but at the same time I am reasonable enough to understand that any fun over there will probaly come with a price tag. I know what a plane and train ticket cost but...
How much for everyday expeses on average??? like a hostel?? city wide transportation?? and daily entertainment..(musems etc.)?? and most importantly food??
I would assume every county is different and I expect the farther west I go the more expensive it will get but I would like to hear from some experienced travellers.
Thanks...... ;D ;D

The average to go on is usually $50/day. That accounts for a bed in a dorm in a hostel, some food, and a bit of sightseeing.
Like you said, some countries as in Switzerland, the UK etc. will run you more and some, Spain, Greece anywhere in Eastern Europe might be less.
If you plan on doing a lot of partying, going out, that sort of thing you would want to up the average.

Yep...it's not cheap in Europe. You could do it for a little less but not much.

Personally.....sorry Kim.....I think $50 is a bit low nowadays. Granted, I tend to travel with a bit bigger budget in general, but even bare bones I think closer to $70 is a more realistic picture these days. If you want to do any sightseeing at all to speak of and maybe eat a halfway decent meal every day or so I don't think $50 is enough.

Yeah but you stay in private rooms-I think you can do $50 staying in dorms. Obviously this is a serious budget though.

My "rule of thumb" is that daily expenses are devided fairly equal to 3 parts: Accomodation, food, and the rest, which include sight seeing, urban transportation, plus many small expenses that add up to quite a big sum... so in places where an average hostel bed (in dorms, of course) cost 10-12$ (like in Eastern Europe), I would budget 30-35$ a day. In western Europe hostels cost between 15-20$ (even more in London and Scandinavia), so I would budget 45-60$... due to the latest devaluation of US$ vs all European currences, It's now closer to 60 than 45... expensive places might be as much as 80$/day... Entertainment, shopping and inter-city transportation are extra... bear in mind that your transport expenses don't end once you bought a rail pass, even if it's a consecutive pass... these days it's impossible to get away from paying supplements or mandatory reservations... when I travelled with a rail pass 15 years ago I managed not to pay any supplement, but in those days, TGV was the only high-speed train... BTW... couchettes reservation ARE included in the daily budget since that's accomodation... this is the equivalent of 6-bed hostel dorm (and some hostels I've stayed at were worst than that...)

I find with today's currency conversions $70-$80 a day, after rail passes and air is safe. Some places will cost less, but it is always better to have more...you never know when you might need it. This is especially true if you plan on going solo and with a very open itinerary-like me.
