Hi pple,
I'm at a loss. I understand from previous threads that ATMs are the way to go. But i just checked with my bank and they'll convert my Singapore dollars to US dollars then to Euros so it will be at a disadvantage according to them. And they said my card is only accepted at ATMs with a PLUS symbol, and i do not know how many of such there are in Europe!
So anyone in Singapore who have backpacked b4 please gimme some feedback on how you did it last time! TKs a lot!

I'm not in Singapore, but it might be worth it to use ATMs even with this extra charge. Ask them exactly how much more this will cost. Will they also charge a flat fee per withdrawal? Do they use bank exchange rates?
I saw the PLUS symbol all over the place.
Say each withdrawal costs you 4 Euros (just for an example). If you withdraw money every couple days, that is only 2 Euros per day, so a small part of the cost of your trip. It's worth it to not have to worry about losing lots of money.
Travellers' cheques will have a commission on them and I doubt you would come out ahead using them, even with this drawback.
You might want to check what percentage your credit card company will charge you also.
In your case, it might be worth it to get money before you go. In my case, there is an outlet in Vancouver here that has really excellent exchange rates. So I do get some money from them before I go, because the loss compared to using the ATM card is very slight. (In fact, because I have to pay a flat fee in my case, I don't think I lose.) I pay careful attention to ensure the rate I'm getting is close to the bank rate.
Do you have any foreign exchange outlets that have good exchange rates? You could get a few hundred Euros to get you started, if so.

I'm from Singapore and I'm having problem with this issue as well. Travelex provide this Cash Passport service that allow us to withdraw cash from any VISA ATMs. Using 4 digit pin. So you can apply the card and top up with euro. There's a commission charge of 1% for every top up, a withdrawal fee of US$2.50. First card is FOC and sub card US$3. I've attach the pamplet. Let me know then perhaps we can share the account. The Max withdraw limit will depend on the bank. to read more abt it, www.cashpassport.com

the service is not provided by any of the banks in spore. It is available at Travelex (travel agency) at Change Alley (Beside Caltex House). The office is somewhere beside BodyShop and opposite of Burks. Nearest mrt station is Raffles Place.
I just applied for it yesterday! ;D
