I am planning on putting a balance on one of my cards when I am travelling throughout Western Europe.
Which one is better/more accepted etc. for use in Western Europe?

Sal, either is widely accepted most anywhere...by why not put that money on a 'card' affiliated debit? You can still earn a bit of interest on the money and not be giving the cards the bucks to in essence 'hold' your money for you. Nearly all debit's nowadays can be attached/affiliated to either Visa or MC, work just the same in a machine or for purchases and yet it is your money only being used and no CC possible charges or fines. Just a thought!

Visa is marginally more accepted than mastercard (although only by a tiny margin). Generally both will be fine- I personally use mastercard and everywhere accepts it no problems.

We used mastercard and found that there were a few places that took Visa but not Mastercard. Most did accept Mastercard if they accepted credit cards. We were surprised in Italy and Belgium though, where there were a lot of shops that wouldn't take credit cards unless you paid over 15 EURO. We ended up needing cash for more than we thought......food, souvenirs, some attraction sites and accomodations at a couple of places. In a couple of cases, credit cards were accepted, but there would be a 2 EURO extra charge. For the most part we were okay with credit card......we're just used to putting everything on credit cards here in Canada.
