Ok, to start off, I am a 17 year old american student hoping to spend many months in europe after I graduate from high school. I spent my junior year of high school in France, so I figured out more or less what things cost in euros (and I learned how much it sucks to be an american in europe right now because of the exchange rate). And I visited a few countries while I was in europe including Austria and the Netherlands so I got the hang of sleeping in dorms at youth hostels and getting cheap food at grocery stores. For this trip I'm planning, I'd like to visit many different countries, including all sorts of different places like Turkey, Norway, Russia, Germany and so on. I've seen many posts asking about a cost per day, but obviously things arent the same price in Stockholm as in Zagreb. I can find youth hostel and museum prices online, but if anyone could offer any help on prices for food for different cities/countries then it would be greatly appreciated. What I mean is like, for me, I thought 15 - 20 euros a day was enough for food in France, as long as I didnt go to restaurants or anything. Is this amount sufficient in other places as well? I went to Poland for a month once, and food was much cheaper there. Basically I'm looking for the minimum amount someone could survive on I suppose. In particular I'm looking for information concerning Eastern European countries including former Yugoslavia. Thanks! Feel free to email me at TheCureIsTheDisease@hotmail.com

€15-20 is NOWHERE near enough for Norway. I was struggling on 400NOK a day there after accommodation, you'd most likely need more like 600-650NOK a day including accommodation, possibly more.
I found transport in Norway to be pretty expensive as well (and this is coming from a Londoner), personally I'd go as far as saying to avoid it unless you really, really want to go there. Try the Baltics instead.

Well, I must say, no matter where you go, buying food at the grocery store is always better and it gives you a better choice at eating what you like!
I would say a whole day of great great food, yogurt as much as you want and all kinds of stuff. (My backpack would be full!) in Prague cost me about 5 canadian dollars and that's because I splurged!
In Nuremberg, the same cost me about 5-6 euros, but I didn't splurge as much, I took the cheap kinds, but it was still as good!
In Amsterdam, finding a grocery store is the challenge, but when you do, I would say for 7-8 euros you eat like a king for the day, and that's 3 meals that you will be full!

Well, according to today's exchange rate, "600-650NOK a day including accommodation" would come out to be about 77 euros. Is all of northern europe this expensive? I've heard lots of talk about norway and sweden, but what about denmark and finland? I've also heard that finland is poorer than its scandinavian neighbors, so are things cheaper there as well? I had planned to buy a 21 day Scanrail Pass for scandinavia...but if it's really that expensive I suppose I should get one for a lot less time. Thanks to those who have posted so far!

You are looking at 155 - 175 NOK for a bed in a 6 person dorm in Oslo, which is 18 - 20 Euros. Add another 30 Euros to that for food and sightseeing and budget about 50 Euros a day. This obviously is for using a hostel kitchen to cook and buying a cheap lunch, not for fancy meals etc. It's also not if you are into going out drinking at night etc. Add extra to your budget for those things.
Didn't find much difference between Norway, Denmark and Sweden, didn't get to Finland.
Budget about 500 NOK extra to take the Norway in a Nutshell fjord tour, it's absolutely stunning. I can't rave about it enough.
