hi question regarding where to keep the money and valuables. I know to wear a money belt with the main stuff however what did people do when you went swimming. Can you leave your passport, cards in a safe at your hotel or hostel? We plan to spend 4 days in cinque terre and it would suck for one to swim one to watch.
also any recommendations on what kind of money belt or otehr tips thx

If a safe is available, that's an option. It would depend on how trustworthy you felt it was. There are also plastic devices you can get that are airtight and specifically designed for this purpose. Check at a backpacker's travel store. I'd like to hear how you handle it, since this is a hassle that comes up quite a bit.

This is a topic that I've been giving some thought to as well, as I plan to be visiting areas like the Cinque Terre where I might want to go for a swim. As I'll be travelling on my own, I won't have the option of having someone watch my valuables while I swim. One product that I've been considering is called "Splash Caddy", available at Magellan's. It appears to be similar to a waist pack with really secure waterproof liners. It's available in two sizes, which might allow storage of the digital Camera or Cell Phone as well as credit / debit cards and cash. Hopefully it's got a very secure catch, which won't release while diving or whatever? I'm not entirely comfortable leaving items like this with people at the front desk, especially in smaller establishments. I've heard a few stories about dodgy Hotel personnel stealing from the guests. Also, if I'm out touring for the day I might need some of the items (Camera, Debit Card), so it would be a nuisance to have to return to the Hotel. As I recall there have been some good suggestions on this topic in earlier posts. Hopefully there will be some further replies on this. Good luck with this!

Just so everyone is aware, Cinque Terre isn't a beach kind of place. There is a little, bland stretch of beach in Monterosso but besides that, it's not known for swimming, beaches etc. None of the other towns really have swimming areas.

Hey KiM! You know what I won with the picture contest a few months back, is this totally submersible or only good for splashing around? Do you know?
Thanks!

I forget whether it was the Wet Safe money belt or a splash box.. it was a splashbox like this, right? www.gogogear.com.au/shopexd.asp?id=172I'm not sure - I would test it out in the bathtub or something, just put some scrap paper in there and see. Kim

Good idea! I would have done that anyways, wouldn't trust just anything with my passport!
But the link you put in isn't what I got. What I won was like some kind of money belt and it rolls up a few times and then snaps closed!

Oh OK, I couldn't remember who got what - there were so many prizes going out around then!
OK, I just looked it up and it says: The new "Roll n' Seal" system will keep contents safe and dry when swimming or in any other wet weather conditions.
So I would assume it's fine for swimming but let me know how it goes after the bathtub test!
