At any given time, how much cash do you have on you when traveling?

I prefer not to have more than the equivalent of about $300 CAD (say 200 Euros), and usually less. That would be right after visiting an ATM.

Ya...I'm thinking about 100 pounds or so.
Right off the bat I need to hand over about 120pounds (in cash) to the travel company. I wondered about taking it over in cash or just getting it there.

I'm with WT, that is probably my maximum as well - $300. I'd rather pay the charge (I think it was $3) each time, it's worth it so I don't lose it or get it stolen!

I regularly withdrew 200 euros/pounds as needed. I had $250 US in my 'hidden stash' for emergencies if dire straights arrived. But 200 local currency was my standard withdrawal. I could afford to lose that much and not break the bank. Much more than that on hand and I would be nervous about my cash and so willing to pay if needed the withdrawal fes for smaller amounts. Amended to say I normally used my debit card to pay for accomodationhs so cash was for food, sites, etc. And I suggest you use your debit for anything you can.....keeps your needed 'cash on hand' amounts to a minimum.

Well, I agree, I withdrew about every city I went to, which means about every 2-3-4 days, I withdrew only what i needed for that city, this way I didn't have any trouble or worries about having too much many!
I agree that you must have an emergency stash though!

I don't keep that much, about 50 Euros in my money belt, with a copy of my cards, just in case! xoxo jen

I had a small mens tri-fold wallet that I kept my cards and Id in......very thin and it fit in my money belt. I kept 250 US in the wallet. The local funds that I withdrew I also kept in my money belt less what I thought I would need for that day. Daily funds I kept in my pocket. I tried to keep getting into my money belt in public to an absolute minimum.

Yup, I agree, never show you have a money belt, because then it becomes useless to have a hiding spot if people know it's there!

I'm going to pick up one of those little leather change purses. Last time I was in England I ended up with a wack of change. This way I can keep bills and stuff in my pocket, but use the purse for small purchases.

Yup, I'd say that's a good idea! My wallet ended up weighing tons from spare change!

I had a friend who was robbed in Denmark (I think..might have been Norway) while walking on the street and she just handed over her change purse. The guy just wanted it done quickly so he didn't even question it. Just asked for her money (in English), she handed over his change purse and he took off. She figured he ended up with a little over 10 bucks Canadian because she had her bills in her pockets.

500 euros. I never felt nervous or in danger anywhere I went. I didn't bother with a money belt either...but I'm a big guy so that may have been a bit of a deterrant for thieves.
