David, I'm not too sure about that. I think luck played a big part in it. My friend is brilliant, PhD brilliant, but she's a bit scatterbrained. I could never travel with her. She once tried to get into Scotland without her Canadian passport. She didn't bother to pack it because Scotland was part of the Commonwealth. That's how her mind works. ;D

i've known plenty of Ph.D.'s with very poor street smarts. actually, i've met some Ph.D.'s who just weren't that smart!
also, some of the brightest folks i've met had no more than a grade school education.
the clever PhD's are usually on the tenure track at a good college.

in my secure pouch when travelling, i always have a US$100 bill, or two. and, in Europe, i often have a €200 bill in there, too.
in my pockets, €50 + change?

David, I hear ya! I spent too many years in the Academic world for my own good. The smartest man I ever met was my grandfather and he only made it to grade 7.
