We're planning a trip to Europe, hopefully aiming to take in a few countries over a month or so period. We're having trouble finding suitable and inexpensive accomodation. Obviously hostels are the cheapest thing around but we've found that a lot of them are same sex or at least separate the sexes. We were hoping to find some sort of middle ground between a hostel and a B&B. Something a little nicer than a Hostel without going as expensive as a B&B. If anyone had any advice we'd be very appreciative.

You can get private rooms in hostels as well-some are ensuite and some share a bathroom. There aren't usually very many private rooms per hostel so it's a good idea to make a reservation.
In some places though, it's cheaper to stay in a private room in a cheap hotel than it is in a private room in a hostel. Many times hostels have better facilities for saving you money, such as a kitchen, so you have to weigh the pros and cons of how much difference the cost is.
For mixed accommodation in hostels, try looking at the independent hostels, rather than the Hostelling International ones as they tend to be more relaxed.
If you want to list off the cities you are thinking of going to, I might be able to help with some suggestions of accommodation.

Well, this thread is over a year old...but who cares?! I'll bring it back to life as it certainly pertains to our situation.
We are a couple travelling for 3 months and would prefer to stay closely as much as possible. Due to funds, we're most likely going to have to stick with Hostels, but will try at some private rooms too. Are there any good sites we can check that are a great resource for independant hostels that have mixed accomidations?
Key places we'll be visiting if you have any specific suggestions (B&B's welcome too!): UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switz, Czech, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Ireland.
Thanks!

Do you have your cities that you want to visit yet? Spain - you can pretty much wing it, there are cheap rooms for rent all over the place. We booked a double room in advance but could have gotten things way cheaper if we had of waited. Greece - also wing it. When you get off the boats for the islands, you will be met by about 100 people with cards showing their rooms. Make sure to find out where the rooms are. Location is everything. Switzerland. VERY pricey. I know that you are going to be doing some dorm rooms and this is the place to do it as a private room will cost an arm and a leg. For Interlaken, hands down, the best hostel (actually one of the best during our whole 7 months) is the Backpackers Villa. You will want a reservation. www.villa.ch/Germany. For Berlin, we loved the Circus Hostel. We had a private room (2 single beds as you will find they often are in Europe) and it was fantastic. There are two, we stayed at the one on Rosa-Luxemburg but I'm sure the other one is good too. Make sure to do the amazing walking tour (Brewers Best of Berlin) that leaves from there. www.circus-berlin.de/Portugal - I'd say wing it but definately book in advance for Lagos. We stayed at this great deal of a little pension called the Rubi-Mar. It's run by 2 English gay guys that are now living in Lagos. The service was incredible. They even brought you freshly baked buns, jam and coffee to your room every morning - at the hour that you requested the night before. Loved the place. Ask for a room with a view or balcony and a private bathroom if you can. Definately reserve though. rubimar.freeyellow.com/More later! Kim

My girlfriend and I will be traveling this spring for 6 weeks throughout europe. It is a big concern that we will have to be separated when we stay at hostels. Anyone willing to share their own experiences with this? How much should we expect to pay on average for a room? Thanks

I'd see if your budget can handle getting private double rooms. You can get these at hostels if you book them in advance, often months in advance.
Also, some hotels are pretty cheap also - depending where you are going. And as mentioned in my previous post, Priceline can be a good deal in some instances.

I forgot to add my standard plug for Ibis, ETAP, and Formule1 - these can all be really cheap options, particularly if you don't stay in a major center. www.accor.com
