Ok so I finally am set to book my trip to Europe. I have been thinking about it for a while, and I'm finally ready to book the flights and pull the trigger. Once the flights are set and booked I'll be posting all over this forum with questions etc...but my question for now is if any of you have hostels that you'd reccomend, or specifically wouldn't reccomend, in the following cities:
Dublin Amsterdam Berlin Prague Krakow Budapest Belgrade
I'll be there from May 22ndish to June 22ndish. Thanks so much

I only have recommendations for Prague. After asking 47 people who have been there and checking all available reviews I would recommend Hostel U Melounu, Sir Toby's, or The Boathouse. I'm staying at The Boathouse because the other two were booked for part of the time I'll be there... and I booked months ago.

Berlin - everyone recommends the Circus, and the Clubhouse is pretty popular too.
Amsterdam - depends if you want a party at the hostel or not. But it seems the Shelter and StayOkay hostels (all locations) are particularly good if you don't want parties.
The party vs. non-party is an important distinction in numerous hostel choices.

I'm going by myself so I think more a party place would be best for me. I want to meet people and have a good time and all that. However, I don't want to sleep in like a smoky room and whatever.

If you're looking for a party hostel, then add The Golden Sickle to the recommendations for Prague.

This might be a stupid question, but besides the obvious, whats the difference between a party hostel and a non-party hostel. Like at the party hostel, since I'm by myself are you like absolutely guaranteed to meet some cool people that are going to want to go to the clubs and do all that stuff? or are they like anti-social and just want to stay with their groups, and it would stink for me cuz I'd be by myself in which case I'm sure I wouldn't want to party as hard. Same thing for the non-party hostel, do those people still like to go out. I've never been so please give as detailed a description as you can of a "party hostel" you've stayed in vs. a "non-party hostel" Also more hostels in the towns listed above would be great. Thanks so much!

I personally found in Amsterdam (stayed at the Bulldog) that people tended to stick in their groups- they'd talk to me be nice civil whatever, but never did I get an invite to join, or even asked what my plans were for the evening....not that it bothered me so much, I was winding down getting ready to go home, and really just wanted to stay in and read and so forth.
I did find in the quieter hostels previous to that, I met loads more people- since people were tending to be travelling on their own and thus were also looking for someone to talk to. I found breakfast time to be the best time for meeting people!
And when I found I met no-one and was really keen to go to the pub, I just went anyway, and always ended up chatting with the bar staff if it wasn't busy! One night in Edinburgh, the guy behind the bar knocked off early to come have some drinks with me!

Based on my experience in Oct. '03 Berlin - Circus is very good, clean, etc. Not a big party place but Berlin has plenty of opportunities to party. Prague - Boathouse is quiet for recuperating - easy to meet people who are heading to the city. Budapest - avoid the Aquarium Hotel/Hostel. People were nice but the setup is edgy.

Went to Amsterdam, Berlin and Prague las summer Amsterdam - Flying Pig Downtown is THE place to be in Amsterdam, its one of the more expensive hostels but its worth it. Smoked pot once in my life - at the front of Flying Pig. Berlin - Stayed at Circus which was really nice, straight out of Ikea, but zero partying. I would suggest it if you need some rest but not for partying. Prague - Stayed at Hostel Elf and had a blast, everybody chills in the lobby drinking cheap czech beer.

Well Apple Hostel in Prague is cheap, comfy and has a really cool crowd of people. You can party or not, it's kind of both, but nobody complains!

I stayed at A&O Zoo in Berlin, it was good for meetin people and partying, since it has two bars. The showers were disgusting though... if you can handle that it is a great place, literally accross the street from the station and dirt cheap, 10 euro for a 12 person room, 13e for an 8 person room. I'm actually in Prague right now and I'm staying at the boathouse, it is fantastic, such a homey attmosphere. The people are fantastic, and the staff know you by name, which I think is top notch. In Amsterdam, I don't know where is good to stay, just don't stay at the "Budget Tourist Inn", it was clean, but it was a crappy place.
