A man after my own heart - I have the Nikon D70.
So both dustoffmom and I travel with camera backpacks and we both have the kind that unzips in the middle to reveal the bottom that had room for a body and a few lens. The top has an empty section for a guidebook or whatever. This is really handy for customs as you don't have to take anything out - you just upzip it and flip the top so they can see in.
The thing is is you want to cut down on the weight so like you said, limit yourself to 2 lens. I wouldn't take the flash - there will only be a few circumstances that it may come in handy, not enough to make it worth it.
Agree with Muvver in regards to the card reader, most internet cafes won't let you plug things in, download etc. Getting CD's burnt is the best idea but make sure you check the pictures on the CD before you delete them.

Yep, without a flash is fine. You wouldn't want to use a flash anyway as some of the pieces, like the Mona Lisa are in glass cases.

I was just going to say what Patrick said. I'm a perfectionist and if something isn't right with a shot, I want to take it again. Plus, it allows you to experiment without the expense of developing.
Another beautiful thing with my digital SLR is that is records every setting you used for every picture on the card (as long as you don't delete them) so that you can refer back to them later. When you take a million photos, it all becomes a blur and I can never remember.
I swear Ging, we will slowly drag you over to our side ;D ;D

Sure, it's fine with me. I just don't allow advertisements (spam) from companies - if it's from an established member that has no affiliation, it's perfectly fine.

This is going to be next near impossible to find. Maybe think about getting a regular pack for your clothes etc. (aim for a smaller size) and get a camera pack that you can wear on the front of you (opposite to how it should be worn). I have this one (in black) and love it as it flips open to reveal everything which is perfect for X-Ray machines. I have a Nikon digital SLR (D70) and it fits 1-2 other lenses or 1 other and a bunch of misc. crap on the bottom (which is what I usually carry!) The top has a small section that makes it great for a daypack - can hold water, guidebook etc. www.lowepro.com/pages/series/trekking/oriontrk.htmAs far as the camping goes, I don't really recommend it. You will be carrying all this extra gear and the campgrounds are far and few between. When you do find them, they are way the hell out and it's hard to get to them using public transportation. Many people think they will just camp in public parks etc., but that isn't allowed. Kim

That Disc Steno sounds great - I've gotta check that out! Problem for me with burning the pictures is that I have a digital SLR which takes massive photos - great for resolution, not so great for the space they take up! Also, I have this fear that I will burn a CD in a shop, wipe out the pictures then find out something went wonky with the CD and it didn't work or something. Paranoid, yes! I have several 512 cards but I do try and erase bad pics as I go. Kim PS Michelle, check your instant messages.

It really depends on the number of pictures you are used to taking and the quality. I would set your camera on Fine rather than High - you will still get great pictures, you will just get more of them.
I'm usually picky about my photos so if say I take 3 or 4 pictures of 1 thing, I check to see which is the best then delete the others that may not be as good.
You'll be fine with a 512 and if you're not, you can always try to find somewhere to burn them, like Jen says. A word of warning though, find a computer after that and look through them to make sure the quality is decent before deleting them.
Also, you can always buy a second card in Europe if it really comes to that. I'd wait and see, if you don't need another you'll save yourself some money.

I don't know this model in paticular but I have to give rave reviews to Pentax in general as every Pentax I have had has been outstanding. Eagle, I think it depends on your camera as I get my digital pictures printed all the time and I don't get any white borders. I think it depends on the size of pictures your camera takes and the megapixels. Mine takes giant pictures due to having digital SLR so I don't every get any pixelation of the photos when enlarging either. www.winkflash.ca will do your pictures for .24 CND with a set $1.99 CND for shipping, no matter how many pictures. There is a US version as well for the Americans on the board, www.winkflash.com - .18 US a picture, free shipping for the summer. Kim

You are probably better off finding a camera store that will upload them for you.
You could run into a few snags trying to do it yourself; voltage, the fact that the internet cafe owners do not like you hooking things up to their computers, the fact that you would have to load your camera software on a pc and the age of some of the computers (dinosaurs).
The plugs are different country to country. You also may need a voltage converter, if yours doesn't have dual voltage. These are so heavy and bulky you may want to consider just disposable batteries if this is the case.

I did end up getting the Nikon D70 and I can't say enough about it, it's truly my dream camera. LovinEurope - the Canon Rebel (digital SLR) was my second choice, also a great camera.
The only disadvantage of course is the gear, depends on whether you mind packing it around or not. I know that Dustoffmom and I both have camera backpacks where the body, lenses etc. all fit into compartments which helps alot.
Hard call - I have a point and shoot which is handy but you will find once you start using a digital SLR, you can't go back!

Get this - my dream camera is so popular that you can't get one here without putting down a deposit and getting on a waiting list!
(I've been phoning around..)
Looks like you can get one in a week to two weeks if you put down your deposit. If not, it's going to be at least 6 weeks to a month.
Guess it's everyone elses dream camera too! ;D

I'm really dying for the SLR - that's my big problem.
I do have the Coolpix which I love, it's been a great camera but I do need to upgrade. There have been a couple separate times like the Toronto Sun article where people have needed high resolution photos and I haven't been able to give it to them.
I was considering buying a standard SLR just because I love photography but now I'm like what the hell, mine as well get what I want! I always thought I would go with a Pentax but I have to say I love my Nikon just as much. Both brands make exceptional products.
Some of the specs of the D70 are 6.1 megapixels, 3 frames per second, 144 continuous shots, power up time instant to .02 of a second (wow!), resolution 130k pixels, image sizes up to 3008 x 2000.
I'd like to get it before our honeymoon to have time to get use to it - it's hard to take the dive to spend that kind of $$ though!

Just wondering if anyone has a digital SLR? I'm drooling over the Nikon D70 but the price of $1800 (CND) is brutal!
They do have a payment plan but can I justify it before the expense of the wedding? Haven't decided. I have the Nikon Coolpix 800 right now and do love it but I would love to explore a broader range of photography.
I would looooove to own this camera.
So anyway, gushing over now, does anyone have a digital SLR?

Sure, I think that's a great idea. We do talk alot of photography (paticularly as it's one of dustoffmom's, Eagles and my interests!)
I will create it and move the posts in the next couple of days.
Thanks for suggesting it! I'm always open to suggestions on what we can do to make both the boards and GFE better. Basically, what you guys want - you get! ;D
