Hey all While I'm in Europe I have to go to my uncles wedding. It's not totally fancy or anything actually it's fairly small, but I obviously want to look really nice. This outfit is gonna have to work with pretty casual sandals. So any ideas that might work?Leave it to a girl to stress out about this kinda thing....lol Thanks guys

have been to two formal occations in Europe. when i went to a wedding, it was the very first part of the trip, i had a suit in a hanging bag for the flight over, and i mailed the suit home after they wed. the 2nd time was a friend's PhD hooding (well, it wasn't really a hooding, but that's what we call it here) she packed my suit in her big bag, and took it with her to Vienna. she also brought it back to Dallas. (she continued with paid work at the same lab where the disartation work was done) unfortunately, the suit was infested with bugs by the time it got back to me, so they ate holes in it before i got it dry cleaned. (it was my favorite suit! ) be sure to get the clothes dry cleaned asap when you get home!

You will see pretty much every woman on these boards give you one very good piece of advice: pack a wrinkle resistant little black dress. The little black dress works for every occasion, including weddings, sightseeing, clubs, restaurants, etc. I would say matte jersey is the best fabric - dries easily and doesn't wrinkle. Check out higher end department stores (Nordstrom, Nieman Marcus) for good quality matte jersey dresses and separates (skirts, pants, tops). A little black dress should go with pretty much any sandal you have (as long as they aren't brown). Dress it up with a colorful shaw or scarf you buy enroute and some jewelry. Jewelry is a great way to dress up any outfit while traveling... it's light and takes up no room. Hope that helps! Enjoy the nuptuials!

Sarabeth speaks the gospel to you! A matte jersey 'little black dress' of good quality will pack small, barely wrinkle, fit nearly any occasion with the addition of minor accessories and is a must have for traveling!

I heartily agree that the 'little black dress' is indispensible. I have one in a meshy material that is great for summer travel, it never wrinkles. However, I am probably exposing my age and fuddyduddyness by saying this, but I always thought that black was inappropriate to wear at a wedding, even a casual one? I know, I am an oldtimer. ;D

I'm so definitely not a fashion person (I'll have to consult with my daughter for that . But two or three years ago, I read that the injunction against black at a wedding had been lifted. I guess it depends how conservative the other attendees might be. I could see a situation where someone who hadn't read about this new rule might be taken aback. Maybe take along a definitely non-black accessory/shawl at least?

Yeah, it's OK to wear black at a wedding now - the one time I wore a black dress, I just confirmed with the bride that it wouldn't make her uncomfortable, just to make sure.
She couldn't have cared less - nor will I this summer.
I've already had one person ask me if it was OK if they wore a black dress.

I vaguely remember us talking about this at Backpackers, and somebody saying that people have been wearing black to weddings for years in NYC. Let's face it, black is flattering; I wear it all the time, no matter what the season. The other thing I remember is that you weren't supposed to wear white at a wedding unless you were part of the wedding party. But I remember a girlfriend wore white to my wedding 20 some years ago and I certainly could not have cared less. ;D
