Hello, I will be backpacking around Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Belgium, France and England and leaving soon. I was just wondering, what would be great gifts for my family and friends? I know that Swiss chocolates and English toffees are world famous, my mom is crazy about brooches and buttons and for my friends, I was thinking of getting stuff like t-shirts or cute ornaments and trinkets, depending on what catches my eye and suits my budget. Could anyone please suggest where to get good bargains and what would make great gifts? I feel pretty overwhelmed now because I have no idea what to expect and don’t know what I am going to get for my family and friends. Thank you very much for all the suggestions. I am spending more time in France and England.

Here's something we found-if you are planning on buying chocolates in places like Switzerland, the best place to buy them is in the grocery stores. They are identical to the boxes you will find in the gift and touristy shops, but much cheaper.
If you are going to Zurich, head out to the Lindt chocolate factory. (It's a quick train ride away). The exibit itself is pretty boring and you don't get to see the chocolates being made or anything, but you get a big box of chocolates each for free just for going.
One thing we brought home which isn't really relevant for you as you aren't going to Italy but might help someone else is bottle of olive oil and small jars of Italian spices. The spices were so colorful and the jars so pretty, we got them from the supermarket. I still haven't opened my jar!

Yeah, the Belgian were better than the Swiss-but the Swiss were pretty damn good too! There was this one place in Bruges, run by the mother while the son made chocolates...yummmmm...

Dunno where you are from, but remember you could get into trouble if you were to bring dairy products into Australia (like chocolats). I heard they are pretty strict 'down under'. Still the food-idea is e good plan (buy Belgian chocolats, they REALLY are the best!!!). I brought home all kinds off weird shaped pasta from Italy. Kim is right, buy these things in grocery shops, it's much cheaper. Cat
