It was my birthday yesterday (June 8), and I recalled the same day 15 years ago, when I celebrated my birthday during my backpacking trip in Europe. It was quite a miserable celebration, I should say... the only difference from other days on the road was that I bought a piece of cake to mark the occasion at the hostel. It was at Grasmere in the Lake district, on the day I hiked up to mt. Helvellyn (alt. 950m), England's 2nd highest peak (the highest peak is Scafel Pikes, 978m, also in the Lake District).
Does anyone want to share the experience of a birthday away from home?

Mine was in Europe as well. It sure is different travelling on your birthday, the last thing you want is something else to carry around!!
I told the boyfriend not to buy me anything as we had no money and I didn't want to pack it around. He surprised me on my birthday with a coupon for a "subscription" to my favorite magazine.. as in, we would splurge and buy me every months issue. It was big cause to get the magazine in English cost about triple than it would at home!
He had also carried around a small bear from my mom that said Thinking of You for 2 months cause she wanted me to have it on my birthday.
Very bitter sweet however as days earlier, I had checked my email to find out a very close friend of mine had died in a motorcycle crash. Wasn't too much in the celebrating mood.
Kim
PS Happy late birthday!

My last two birthdays were spent on the road.....50th in Antwerp and 51st in London.....past two Christmas' as well, 2001 in Edinburgh and 2002 Dublin......for both holidays I much preferred the first one, Antwerp and Edinburgh vs. Dublin and London. New Years were in Brugges and Galway those years (birthday is Jan 4th)
Since Lizzy is getting so 'old' now I had thought to not travel over the holidays any more....but already dreamin about where to spend Christmas and birthday this coming winter. ;D

My birthday (November 15th) will be spent in Paris. Far away from those I love! But you better believe that won't stop me from celebrating -- especially since I'm such a HUGE foodie! I'll probably splurge on some fantastic food for myself. Whether that be fantastic prepared food and pastries or a meal at a great restaurant. I PROMISE you thought that the pastries will be first rate! ;D The boyfriend is in Geneva for his birthday (the 15th of June). He doesn't plan on telling people and he'll be working that day! I made him a cake before he left though and we shared it with friends. I'll also give him his present (cufflinks) in Paris. We've decided that our splurge meal will be in part a happy-belated birthday to him and a happy-early birthday for me! Oh and on the topic of Christmas abroad.............. Our High School had a sister school in Sendai, Japan (the location of the recent earthquake). Every year 1 or 2 students would be awarded full scholarships (including board and transportation) to go and study in Japan. The parents however had to pay for the airfare and extras. Since it was SO expensive to fly to Japan no one came home for Christmas. The program at the school was an International program with kids from all over the world (Croatia, South Africa, Australia, Sweden, USA, Canada, etc . .) Anywayz, they were all in the same position. In Japan they don't celebrate Christmas so to distract them the school used to take the foreign students to Kyoto every year for Christmas. I had a friend who got to go to Japan and he said on Christmas day they were in a hotel in Kyoto. Apparently everyone was depressed and said they weren't eating turkey and with family. Anywayz, the sport jackets of the boys uniforms were green...........and someone got the bright idea to turn one into a "faux" Christmas tree!!!!! They hung it up and proceeded to take off all of their jewellery and drape it on the coat. That was their Christmas tree! I always thought that was the most pathetically funny thing I had ever heard! It sounded sad........way sad.......... My sister got lucky though -- the year that she went to Japan my parents flew her to Los Angeles to meet up with us for Christmas. BTW, she was the spoiled one!
