This may seem a slightly odd question, but as someone who has never had a need for a passport before I've been wondering something. I know that Europe is now unified more than ever, so I was wondering if one's passport is still stamped at every border crossing? I've heard that in Liechtenstein you have to pay for the stamp, but how does this work in other countries? I was just wondering b/c even if it is no longer common practice I still really want my passport stamped at every country, and I was just wondering how this whole process works now, esp w/ many borders more lax than before...
Thanks! Danielle

Travelling within the EU by rail, you will most likely not get your passport stamped. You will most definitely get a stamp upon flying into or out of the EU, though. It's a shame.

That's what I was afraid of... Oh well, there are more important things in life than a stamp! Just an excuse for me to fly into more places. ;D Thanks for answering my question though... D

Border crossing procedures no longer exist between countries which are members of Schengen treaty (there are 15 of them!), no matter if you travel by air, land or sea. Liechtenstein is NOT member of Scengen, so your passport may be checked if you enter from Austria.

Weird question coming up:::!!!! No seriously, is there a place you can go to in a train station, embassy, just any place you can go to to actually get a stamp. It's not the end of the world not to get one, but it sure would look good in my passport.... I don't know if any of you know of a place we can get it, except the airport, cause I'm not flying in to all the countries I'll be seing! thanks xoxo Jen

Passports are checked when you enter Schengen countries only when you arrive from a country outside Schengen territory. On occasions that passports are checked they are not necessarily stamped... I have recently crossed by land from Croatia to Slovenia and back and my passport wasn't stamped on both occasions...
No one is stamping passports just for fun...

Thanks for the info... I didn't refer actually as for fun. but it does constitute proof of entering a country... that is mostly why I want the stamp! well...too bad I guess..

Yeah, we just got our passports stamped when we flew. We had them stamped when we flew from Canada to Amsterdam then on our few flights within Europe. As far as trains, had them stamped going into Prague as well as when we took the ferry from England to Ireland (which is dumb by the way, way cheaper to fly!) I wish we had stamps for all of them .. 17 countries would have looked cool in my passport! I did get some from Asia though! That's it! Kim

It's been several years since I did this, but when we lived in Germany some countries would stamp your passport at the TI....Leichtenstein immediately comes to mind although I know others did as well. Of course, it is NOT an official entry stamp, but it is a stamp in your pp.......they charged for it though. Not much, a buck or two and back then I was willing to pay it for that stamp. Nowadays, it is indeed 'difficult' to get stamps as most countries don't seem to bother with them any longer. But since we all seem to eventually visit the TI it is worth asking if they will do it.

We drove thru Liechtenstein border crossings 4 times ;D trying to get them to check our passports & a stamp, but they kept waving us thru. We were driving with french no plates, Same in Switzerland didnt even see where the border is with Germany?? and Austria on the train, there were no checks with any of them. I was very disappointed. ;D

So far I have flown from Toronto to Paris, crossed into Switzerland, gone in between Switzerland and France many times, crossed borders back and forth between Switzerland and Italy and I have YET to get my passport stamped!!! In fact in many places when they saw it was a Canadian passport they didn't even bother opening the damn thing. The only thing I have to show that I've been here is my newly acquired French residency permit. Although seeing as they never checked anything I could have gotten away with just overstaying and no one would know. But I'm law abidding like that! I'm heading to Germany and Austria next - I'm positive there will be no stamping going on.
