This is the first time I travel abroad and I will do it on my own. I am a young female. I feel excited and a bit worried/scared too Is it safe to stay in mixed-dorm of a hostel ? Do the ticket sellers at train stations/ bus drivers in Germany speak English ? I ask because I've heard that not many German people speak English. I will travel to Germany, Austria and Denmark. Do you have any advices especially for girl travelling alone like me in those countries ? Thank you.

>>>>>>Do the ticket sellers at train stations/ bus drivers in Germany speak English ? I ask because I've heard that not many German people speak English. <<< ;D 5 years of English is mandatory in German schools.....has been for quite a long time. If you are ever stuck, look for anyone under 30 or so and I guarantee they will speak English. Especially a teenager, they will be able to 'out slang' you. ;D But generally speaking, most everyone in Germany speaks some English and those at ticketing type venues most assuredly will. Stop worrying about this aspect of your trip, you'll have no problems. Can't help you with the hostel dorm question, but can say I have traveled often to Europe now, always solo and have yet to have any problems. It is not as unusual as one would think. There are many solo travelers nowadays, once you do it it tends to become a preferred way to go. It's quite liberating to be completely in charge....where you will go, how long to stay, what to see, when to eat.....d you need not be alone for long as you will meet many others that you can team up with if you choose. ging

No question is a stupid question! You can't know till you've done it....why you ask others. Once you return, others will ask you. ;D
When and where are you going?

Hey there, I'm 25 and just got back from a 6 week trip to europe solo. I stayed in many mixed hostel rooms and never had any problems at all. I didn't go to Denmark but out of 7 countries I can honestly say I felt the most safe in Germany and they were by far some of the most friendly people I encountered on my trip Austria was great as well, I didn't have any problems travelling alone - just be aware of your surroundings all the time. You'll meet so many people - rarely will you be completely on your own. You have nothing to fear at all. If you don't feel comfortable or you think some of the people in your compartment or room etc. are creepy - just move. You don't owe them anything - who cares what they think of you. Hostels were a breeze, there are so many people in the same situation as yourself and people are very respectful - guys and girls alike. Not a single difficulty with finding English speaking germans. If you do encounter a situation where the person doesn't know english just turn around, there's a good chance someone will be more than willing to help you out. Good luck Kelly
