I'm looking for a good history on the Baltic States as I am going there next June for a couple of weeks. Does anyone have a recommendation? Also, which guidebook should I invest in?

Where exactly are you going? The problem with the Baltics books is that they aren't updated very regularly. It might be better to take a couple smaller, individual country books - depending on where you are going.
Rick Steves has one called "Rick Steves' Russia & the Baltics (Serial)". but I believe the last update was 1998.
There is also "Lonely Planet Scandinavian & Baltic Europe", not sure when that was last updated.

The Lonely Planet also has a guidebook titled "Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania" that was updated sometime in 2003.
