i was just curious how useful a gps would be for a 2 month trip through europe. has anybody had much use with them, would it be unnecessary or helpful?

I haven't heard of using them on a backpacking trip, but I guess it's possible.
I have read suggestions to take a compass with you, so that when exiting a metro station or otherwise wandering around you can quickly tell which direction is which.
