I was thinking tonight in the bath about things I do as I lead up to a trip away, and wondered about others.
What do you do either in the lead up or when you travel that is your own little personal thing?
I mean stuff like my dad, if its car travel he MUST have a packet of Minities. Planes, trains, buses, nope, doesn't need them, but if its in a car he has to have a packet of minties.
Also my dad picks his navigator, and measures their finger size according to the maps scales- so when he is driving and asks "how far to Galway from here?" instead of everyone trying to convert the measurements we can just say "two fingers".
Me? People can pick when I'm planning a trip easy. Firstly they find half bottles of shampoo and conditioner and body wash and face cleanser and deodorant and so on, in the bathroom cupboard in a plastic bag. Because when I get down to say 3 weeks worth left, if its a 3 week trip, I put it away, get a new one to use now, saving the 3 weeks worth that is left, for my trip. And that way at the end of the 3 week trip its empty, I can chuck it and voila, a little more space, if only for duty free perfume and alcohol!
At the end of winter I will go through my winter clothes and any I didn't wear at all will end up in a bag for the salvos or vinnies, but this winter I can see already a pair of perfectly fine pyjamas I haven't worn because I have 5 other pair, which I'll pack for my trip instead of vinnies- they were going to be tossed anyway so at the end of the trip I can toss them, and more room again. Am sure there are a few t-shirts like too, that will do nicely to wear under my jumpers and so on...Last trip, I made room by ditching a pair of jeans, a pair of boots, a pair of pyjamas and a jumper!
Every week I buy things to put away- this week was all my ziplock bags. Next week will be the travel tissues. Week after will be something else!
Lists will start appearing around my house in about 3 months time with people's names on it, and beside it a possible small souvenir I can get. I hate being away and not knowing what to get someone, but really wanting to, so before I go, if something comes up in conversation that indicates a possible idea, I'll add it to the list so if I see it on my travels, then I will remember. (Nobody knew i did this until last trip my brother found a piece of paper the night before I left that said his name and "U2 t-shirt" beside it- and they wondered why I always got the perfect gift!)
When I am travelling- I always pack one or two tops that are that little bit nicer, but I won't wear them regulary. I like variety in clothes, and when I wake up feeling like crap one morning, I pull out the nice top and it feels like I've got something completely new and it lifts my spirits.
I also take a small bottle of a scented body wash I don't use regularly, and similarly, pull it out when I am feelng a bit blah- again, its something I leave behind with other travellers if its still half full, to give me more room.
I'll probably think of more as the days go on to add to the list.....
