The only student card worth having is ISIC. Either get that or don't bother. Then again, I find that my Uni card often works for a discount outside the UK (it always works at home), although there are times that it doesn't.
If it does work you'll normally get a discount around 10-15% which can add up. Unfortunately you won't get a discount on transport though.

I personally regretted getting the ISE card. I only used it twice for my entire trip. Once for entrance to St chapel in Paris to get a discount and the other for a student meal in Mcdonalds in Toulouse.
If you are not planning on booking those affliated youth hostels, i think the card is a waste of $$.... JMHO

I think it is definately worth getting the ISIC card, IF you are planning on booking through STA travel, or planning on asking for a student discount everywhere you go. My problem is that I would always forget to bring it when I was going somewhere that I could have gotten a discount. However, if you want to save money, check out the STA website, their airfares are usually (not always) a pretty good deal and you have to have an ISIC card to get the discount with them. It kind of depends on if you have already booked your tickets, where you are going and if you are the type of person who will remember to carry it around with you (I'm not, but I would still recommend it just for the ticket discount- $22 is not that bad if you are saving $400)

The card isn't very expensive in Australia, so it was worth getting.. I only needed to use it a few times to get my money's worth! The biggest card for me was through YHA - the Hostel International Card. This is $52 for a year, cheaper if you get it for two or three years, but because I travelled by train across countries, I saved 7% on my Eurail pass! Which in effect - paid for my card! So even before I left Australia, the card had already paid of itself! Discount cards are what they are, discount cards, so if you know your research, do your homework, you can save a lot of money in the long run!
