Hi
I was wondering if someone could help me on this topic... I'm not sure what kind of ID to bring. Is a passport the only piece of picture ID that I need or should I bring my drvers licence, health card, birth certificate etc...
Thanks for your help!

I always bring along my drivers license and insurance card, not my birth certificate though. DL I bring for all those 'tour' places that want an ID to use the audio guides for example and I am totally paranoid about showing/leaving my passport anywhere. DL's readily accepted and if it gets lost, it's easy to replace. For myself, the less I need to show my passport or have it in sight the better. But in fact, passport, insurance card along with whatever sort of 'money' cards you are using will be sufficient.

I'd say passport (obviously) and then a driving licence or your country's ID card (if you have one). As well as that, maybe bring along a student card (if applicable)- it needn't be an ISIC card- I've had my UK student card accepted in loads of other countries and the same is probably true with other country's student cards.

Do you need your birth certificate to get another passport should the worst happen? I have taken it before for that reason.

I thought that you just needed to keep copies of your passport and prints of your photo? Do you need other ID verification too? I hadn't planned on taking my birth certificate, but I'm always losing stuff so I want to be as prepared as possible.

There is no need to bring your birth certificate unless that's the only thing you bring. Meaning, you used to be able to go to the southern countries of america from canada with jsut your birth certificate. Now it's better with a passport because you mostly stop in the states.
You don't need your birth certificate to get a new passport because they have this information in the system. Anyways, even if you did, don't bring it with you cause if you don't have your passport anymore, big chances are your birth certificate is gone with it!
What I suggest is keep copies of everything, everywhere and leave some scanned in your email, left at home with mom or children, one in your backpack, one on you in your pocket and then the real ones in your money belt! xoxo
