well, how about splitting a few things up? I never carried everything together...a seperate copy of a passport, passport, money, odds and ends...have about three different sets of money and stuff...then, use lockers or whatever is available...always carry your original passport, but store copies in other places...and if you're going to the beach, you probably won't need that much money anyways...just diversify...

My rule of thumb is that I never leave my passport or credit card at a hostel. But for swimming here is what I have done in the past. One person has to stay on the beach if with a group. And this has to be a member of your immediate group, not someone you picked up in traveling. There are people who hang around the beaches looking for opportunities like this. One story is of a group that had a girl backpacker in it they picked up along the route. While swimming, she went back to the hostel to go to the bathroom. Back at the room, she cleaned everybody out, and they never saw her again. Recentely, some friends and I went swimming at Cinque Terra. Lots of backpackers, but I had a funny feeling about several guys lurking. I stayed on the beach while others were in the water. If solo, either get a waterproof belt to go under your suit, or securely lock the stuff up at the hostel.
