I have an 18 hour layover in LA and I was just wondering if I could sleep in the airport. I'm pretty sure my cash flow by that point will be very slim and unless I can wiggle myself on an earlier flight, I'm stuck!

You can - you probably won't get much sleep cause of all the people coming and going but if you can find a quiet spot, it's no biggie.
Another option would be going to a hostel - I know a bunch of the LA hostels have free airport pickups and cost about $20 US, which is pretty good.

I've gotten lounge passes from people on FlyerTalk.
These would be very helpful for getting a quiet place to rest for a while, and offer free food and drink. I'm not sure what the rules are for using them on layovers (I've only used them while waiting for the departure flight).
Do you know anyone who has some sort of status with the appropriate airline who could give you a pass that would work for this? It's also possible you could buy your way into a lounge (although the hostel is probably a better idea in that case).
If it were me, trying to spend 18 hours in the airport including trying to sleep there would be a surefire way to get sick.
One nice, probably quiet place I have seen in LAX is the smoking area. I've never used it, of course, but I did walk out to see it, as it's a nice courtyard with palm trees around. You'd just have to put with the smokers!

What i think I'll do is once I get to the airport I'll ask if I can be moved to an earlier flight and if not I'll spend one last night in a hostel! Great way to end a trip!
And I'm also lucky since I do happen to know someone with the appropriate status for a lounge pass. They're always receiving freebies!
