It's a huge deal indeed and customs/border agents are 'diligent' indeed on routes into/out of there. Having lived in Germany for many many years I can supply names of literally dozens of folks who found themselves in legal trouble indeed and in jail or back in the US immediately for trying to bring a 'souviner' back from Amsterdam.

Whilst I don't know where you're from or anything, I doubt you'll have a problem bringing absinthe back. Then again, it's nowhere near the version that Van Gogh etc used to drink. It doesn't contain wormwood any more (the active hallucionogen) and is pretty much just like Vodka with green colouring . As for cannabis, I don't advocate taking it across borders. Then again, borders within Europe are pretty much a formality nowadays so you could quite easily do it. However, if you were caught with it in your possession in Germany then you can expect a lengthy sentence, to be increased if you were done for supply (n.b. supply can be giving a tiny amount to a friend, there needn't be any cash involved).

DO NOT try to smuggle drugs across the border!
As Dustoff said; when you get caught, you'll be facing jailtime. In the Netherlands, you might get away with just giving up the stuff you have on you, but that rule only is valid for a tiny amount. 5 grams, I believe. But don't take my word for it.
And don't think you're the smart one who know where to hide it so customs won't find it. Rest assured, they know all the tricks in the book.
I apologise if this sounds harsh, but I want to emphasize that, although using pot in The Netherlands is allowed, technically it's not legal and you have to be very careful how much you buy and when and where you use it. To add to that, in other countries the police isn't lenient at all.

mgsimpleton, not sure where you're travelling from, but check with your local Customs authorities regarding the Absinthe. They many have limits on the quantity you can bring back (ie: there are limits on the amounts of wine and/or spirits that are allowed back when out of the country).
With regard to the Pot, are you serious? Do NOT travel with this across ANY borders! While the authorities in Amsterdam may "look the other way" (as Cat pointed out, this is technically illegal), rest assured it's not looked on the same way in other parts of Europe.
Although a slightly different scenario in a different time, perhaps you should rent the movie "Midnight Express" (a true story) to see an extreme example of what can happen.
Hope this has helped. Happy travels!!!

I think you can bring back 1.14 L of spirits (about 40 oz.).
I once brought back 2L and had put that on the form. They just waved me through, although they could have charged me something.

Many years back, when I travelled by train from Amsterdam into Germany, the police went on board with sniffing dogs... do they still do that nowadays??

Not sure if they still do....but for sure they were in 2003 when I also was on a train from 'dam to Germany. Hell, even though I knew I did not have a thing on me...those dogs are intimidating as can be.
