I have been hearing some pretty weird horror stories about thefts on backpackers while travelling by train in Europe. Some of them sound a little out there, more like an urban legend. I'm sure theft does happen on trains, but does anyone know of any particular risks to be aware of?

I wouldn't worry about the stories of gassing. I would worry about taking care to make sure your valuables are secure, particularly on night trains. In either case, wear a money belt under your clothes with your passport, money, and bank/credit cards.
That said, I've never taken a night train - partly because I don't like the idea of being alone on one, and partly because I think I would lose most of a night's sleep. Just not my cup of tea, although lots of people swear by them.

I think a lot of the stories you hear are exaggerations honestly. I had no problems on trains whatsoever. on overnight trains I used my bag as either a pillow or footrest....but I woke up everytime someone opened or closed the door to the compartment. night trains suck for sleeping. all I can say is just use common sense and be aware of your surroundings.
