Has anyone ever tried taking a bottle of Absinthe liquor back from Europe to the US and if so, were there any problems?

Absinthe is prohibited by the FDA, why I'll never know (well, it's because it contains thujone which is banned. However, in the quantities contained in commercial absinthe - less than 10mg/litre within the EU - you'd die of alcohol poisoning before it has any affect).
Personally, I'd gamble it. It isn't illegal to bring it back (it isn't a controlled substance like cocaine etc). However, it could be seized by customs, although considering how cheap absinthe is on the Continent it isn't a big problem.

I had a bottle in my checked luggage wrapped in a couple of socks when I flew home to Canada and never had anyone check for it.

Canada has different rules regarding Absinthe than the US, in fact I believe that Absinthe is completely legal in Canada, with similar laws to the UK/EU (i.e. low levels of thujone).
In the US it's banned by the FDA, so it isn't exactly illegal. Transporting absinthe is more akin to bringing in foreign meat, plants etc but without the possible negative effects upon the local ecosystem.
