What the title says! what do you really miss about home when you are away??? I will post my top three: 1. the weather!!! even though we miamians bitch about the heat all the time we actually love going out into the patio or balcony and feeling like we entered a sauna. It's very sexy 2. the food! going to the neighborhood cafeteria and getting a cuban coffee or going to the local bakery and getting a colombian arepa, not to mention fried plantains, yummy!! 3. baseball: my sis and I are baseball freaks and every time i've gone to europe i've missed a chunk of the season! hehee honorable mentions: lizards crawling along my wall, going to the beach at night!!

My number one and it's a HUGE one...
A BATHTUB!!!
I'm a tub freak and not having a tub for 7 months just about killed me! I like to shower in the morning but to relax at night, it's nice to have a bath.
I'd say my number 2 is not having tons of ingredients to cook with, not that I love cooking at home usually. It's funny, I always make a list of things I'm going to cook when I get home and never do it. I always think I will though!
Number 3 - Reality TV. Sad, but true.

I'm too active to really miss anything when I'm travelling but after awhile I do start to long for my bed.

I didn't miss much besides my loved ones, I'm a sucker for family.
I guessed I missed cooking with a lot of ingredients too, I kept having pasta and peppers. It was real good, hell i'd kill for some now with that special sauce, but still, I would have like to be able to make more in Hostels. Most of which didn't even have strainers!!!!
I missed my stuff, although I have no problem sleeping anywhere, anytime, after two months, you start to miss just being in your things and not living out of a bag!

This might sound slightly odd, but I miss working after about a week.
Of course I miss my family members and I worry about not being there to nag them personally.
Kim, I know what you mean about missing a tub. That's not a very common feature in budget places.

The thing I've missed the most when on trips are my TV shows! And my comics each week. Never much miss "home", and I'm good if I just talk to my parents. But I have TiVo now, and my comic guy holds everything till I get back, so I'm good! ;D
BTW, I also agree with Stanncie. No matter how much we complain about the weather here in SoFla, we always seem to be on our balcony just staring at the ocean (or I do, anyway)!

Tim Hortons toasted whole wheat bagel with herb and garlic cream cheese. ;D Mornings after late night European partying made my tummy really miss it.

On a long trip I sometimes miss my car. Not for general 'travel' but if it's getting late and I need to run to the supermarket for example....after a while it would be nice to just hop in the car and scoot on down there without walking. Good old American white bread! Like Wonder or Sunbeam bread...totally fresh, soft, and squishy! I adore the variety of breads and rolls to be found in Europe...but sometimes I just want a bologna sandwich on soft bread. My library and bookstores! Yes, you can find English language books most anywhere, but the selection is normally small and the prices can be outrageous. And I've got to have something to read at all times. The only thing home/house wise that I consistently long for is my washer and dryer. Even if traveling I loathe going to a laundrymat.

English language books can be a pain to find, although if you are in a place for any period of time (say 3/4 days+) you could always get them from amazon or something. I've heard of people doing that and it seems to work ok - also Amex will (or at least used to) receive parcels for cardholders, so you could order them in advance.
As for dr pepper and 'american' bread, you can pretty much get both, especially in the UK (general UK long life 'bread' is very, very similar to the US stuff).
Personally, I don't tend to miss anything in Western Europe. However, in Eastern Europe I miss Western Brands (especially for bottled water, as I hate fizzy water and it can be hard to tell which is fizzy and which isn't when the label is in cyrillic characters) and Western style stores (whereby you grab what you want and take it to a cashier - this really helps to reduce the language barrier).

really?? when i studied in Germany, many, many years ago, i found DP in Netherlands - a bit too much of a drive - but on subsequent trips, couldn't find it. but, that above was meant to be tongue in cheek. - d As for dr pepper and 'american' bread, you can pretty much get both, especially in the UK (general UK long life 'bread' is very, very similar to the US stuff).

This is going to sound really sad but I really craved a slurpee during really hot European summer days (although gelato helped). When I saw a 7 Eleven in Copenhagen I got excited until I realized they didn't sell them.

Me too but due to the caffiene, I'm limited right now which is very unfair seeings as how there is a 7-11 on the corner where I live!
I'm not drinking caffiene throughout the week so once on the weekend I can get one!
Tracie - oh my god, I did that too - in Copenhagen too!!! I was doing a happy dance until I found out they didn't have them. Was it on that main pedestrian shopping street??
