I am planning on going to Europe for about a year, during which I will travel off and on, but be based out of Southampton. Assuming I have a safe place to leave it while travelling, is there any point in bringing my laptop? And if I do, what will I need in terms of hardware? I thought it would be nice to have so I could download my pics etc. while I am over there! Thoughts? Thanks, Skye

Skye, Another topic that has been discussed in much detail in the past....do a search for laptops to read the many thoughts. Overall the general consesus here is...DON'T! The added weight, the aggrevations of having to insure security, the ability to easily deal with film/digital in Europe makes for lugging along a laptop not a winning idea.

I'd bring it. You are practically moving to Southampton (great city to live in btw), so you may need it to do work, use the internet, download pictures etc. As long as it's secure when you are travelling (and you don't take it with you when backpacking) then it should be fine.
In terms of accessories, you should be ok to go. Most laptop PSUs are multi voltage (e.g. 100-240v), although you'll probably need a replacement modem lead with a UK plug (you can get these really cheap over here). Of course, then you'll need a plug adaptor.
