just read an ominous article at IHT.com which says many "experts" regard Italy as the terrorist's next target. [major US ally, has troops, but not many, in Iraq, etc.]
Be careful out there!

David, the "experts" have all said that another attack is inevitable, it's just a question of "when". Even Canada is apparently on the list of targets, although most people here seem to be quite complacent about the whole thing. I certainly hope they're wrong about Italy, but I guess we'll see.
Regarding the London situation, I have such admiration and respect for the the way the British people have responded to this.

I think there are 4 or 5 countries on the "hit list" that was discovered some years ago. Denmark, Italy and Canada were the three I remember. I think Poland as well.
But something like this cound happen anywhere, anytime. What's to say a Seperatist in Quebec doesn't get a wild hair and decides to attack sites in Ottawa. Or a Para-Military/Survivalist group in Oregon from going after US government agencies.
There are Extremists everywhere.

Yeah, now the big thing that they are worried about in our parts is the Olympics as those always bring out a bunch of lunatics.

Kim, Ya, the Olympics do tend to bring out the crazies don't they! But look at some of the other groups out west (and we have our share out here as well!) What about those who appose the logging in the sound area? Wasn't there sabotage done to some of the companies equiptment that could have harmed workers? Look at what happened up north in the Mine where all those men died. That was a union guy wasn't it? didn't want the scab labour in there working? Fantatics are everywhere and the harm they bring with them can be both large and small.
It's a real shame, but it's been around for a long, long time. The key seems to be to get to the root of the problem.

Good point, David!! But no one would ever call it a $1 coin - you'd get the weirdest looks if you called them anything but loonies and toonies!!
Libby - yeah, you are right. The logging and mining here has had some terrible tragedies in regards to sabotage and that sort of thing. It's so sad.
It's everywhere - we were back from Bali less than a week when those horrific bombings happened there. We picked our trip dates randomly and had we planned a week later, it could have been us. That shook me up for a long time as we ate in some of those cafes that were completely wiped out. I'd go back in a second though, I will never, ever let the threat of terrorists turn me off from living my life.

canada is number 8 on the list apparently.
al-qaeda was threatening rome when I was there last fall as well. who knows if it will happen soon.
an old friend of mine was on the way to the club that blew up in bali. her brother in law had to turn back to get his wallet from the hotel when it exploded. scary stuff.
either way you can't live you life inj fear that something may happen.

I agree, if you live your life scared of these people a) they win, & b) you'll never walk out your front door again. We all need to keep on keeping on. (all due respect to those who have either been lost, or lost someone) we need to show that they can not defeat our spirit. They don't look at just the attack and say "great,100 dead" they try to affect tourism, financial markets, jobs, and long term prospects. (think of the increases to our taxes because of security upgrades in nearlyall areas since 9/11) Australia is quite high on the list too. (im aussie) along with the afore mentioned countries. we have the commenwealth games here in Melbourne in March '06. which anyone from countries ruled by the british monachy will know, but others may not. It's the seconfd biggest sporting event in the world behind the Olympics. and in the wake of London, security has been stepped up dramatically already. These things are planned so far in advance, and so meticulously they are really hard to catch. All we can do is hope, and pray that these bastards are caught before anything happens again.

AOL news listed Italy and Denmark as the terrorists next targets, which in truth, has made me concerned, considering I'm leaving for Italy TOMORROW.
However, I can only be aware, try to keep myself safe and hope that the "extra" security measures that AOL also stated were now in place there are doing their jobs.
Just in case, though, I am travelling with health insurance and a copy of my Advanced Health Care Directive (formerly known as a Durable Power of Attorney) which appoints someone to make my health care decisions for me if I become incapacitated. (I work in law, so this occured to me as possibly a smart idea since copies carry the same weight of originals.)

if you worry then the terrorists win. Simple.
I wouldn't have a problem going anywhere in Europe or the US at this moment in time.
