When a "Hollywood" movie premiers in Europe, what language does it play in? Do they dub it over in the language of that country? I really want to see the Da Vinci Code and i'm in Europe when it comes out, so i'm curious to how it works. Thanks!

it totally depends on the country. some places will dub it, some will use subtitles.
well, that's the way it was in the past. it might be different now.

while i have no idea what they have planned for the da vinci code, hollywood movies frequently come out several months later in europe. obviously exceptions are made for huge movies (harry potter and lotr come to mind). it might take even longer for countries that have to dub it or add subtitles?
on a completely differnet subject, daniela... i see you're from georgetown... i applied for a job there... is it a nice place?

there's a college town in Texas, also called Georgetown. i looked, there are nearly 50 places listed in Wikipedia called Georgetown or George Town! on a completely differnet subject, daniela... i see you're from georgetown... i applied for a job there... is it a nice place? |

David - that's the way it works now. Generally though most Western European countries will subtitle it (apart from France), whereas most Eastern European countries will dub it (usually using one actor for the whole film - this can have some interesting results  . In Western Europe you shouldn't have a problem seeing a movie. Even if its been dubbed many cinemas will also show the original English version. |

Thanks! this movie comes out in the next weeks or so here (have seen the trailer in cinema last week). depends on where you want to see it, i know they show the original with subtitles in scandinavia and maybe netherlands, belgium and denmark. movies are complete translated in germany, so if you want the original or subtitles here you have to rent a dvd. afaik you can switch between original and synchronized sound on tv at some movies in (de, pl, cz, sk - not sure about the other countries). |

Movies in The Netherlands are always subtitled. They do sometimes have dubbed versions when it comes to childrens movies, but evne then there is always a subtitled version in the next room.
As far as I know the same applies for Belgium, although they sometimes use subtitles in both French and Flemmisch. So, you get three languages for the price of one! :>

Hey Jules80, if you are talking about Georgetown, Ontario, which is just off the 401, about half an hour from Toronto, it's a pretty nice place. Small, about 30 000 people live here. It's been growing like mad over the past 15 years or so and still growing. We are getting a Winners and a Kelsey's, that's a big deal, haha. Housing is kind of expensive though. It's really nice because you are so close a bunch of main cities, like Mississauga, Oakville and T.O. What kind of job did you apply for? If you need any other specific info let me know!  |

i applied for a job with PARISH geomorphic... a consulting company in fluvial geomorphology (rivers). the job is perfect... i'm just not sure i want to live in small town ontario. but i'm just crossing my fingers i get an interview. they stop taking applications next friday. keep your fingers crossed!

In France if you see "VO" or "Version Originale" on the movie poster, you'll find that the movies are in the original language in which they were made, then given French subtitles. Otherwise they will be dubbed as per other Western Europe countries.
I remember an interesting experience with this in a Romanian cinema - when I eventually saw it in English it wasn't half as much fun to watch!

If you are in Spain and see a filmtitle followed with VO, then it's (like in France), the original version, with subtitles.
And by-the-way, most movies are out here at the same time as in America, the times that there were big differences are long over.
