You can get waterproof containers or money belts. If you are planning on going to the beach alot, it might be worth it. You can see some (Surf Safe, Splash Caddy) by clicking on the Travel Supplies button at the top and searching for Waterproof.
Some people bury theirs in the sand but personally, I think that's crazy. The only really safe way to do it is to take turns going into the water. Never leave it at the hostel, keep it with you at all times.

depends on the youth hostel - whilst some do not provide any safekeeping, some have safety deposit facility, some have personal safes. i have used both to store passport and credit cards without any hassles, but make your assessment when you see the place. If their "safety deposit box" is a shelf behind the counter then you might want to look after your own stuff. But if it's a combination safe with a system of locked boxes they give you the key to, you might feel a bit better about leaving your stuff there.
but my opinion is that it's probably best to carry two sets of ID/money (if you have them) and then keep them separated. that way if your bag gets nicked you still have the ones in your pocket, and if your pocket gets picked you still have the ones in your bag. also have a plan in the back of your mind as to what you'd do if you lost everything you were carrying. personally i keep a scanned copy of my passport online so i can print it out if i need to, and you should know who you're going to call if you lose all your money and need some wired through to the hostel or western union or whatever.
Anyway if you're going swimming at the beach or out clubbing you shouldn't be doing that on your own - and if you are female there will be no shortage of guys from the hostel willing to watch your stuff for you while you swim (have to make sure they don't steal it, though!)
