Not sure exactly where to post this, but I just had a question about skiing in Europe. Has anyone ever skied while on a trip? I'm considering trying to go while in Austria in the middle of May. The thing I'm wondering about is, I'm obviously not going to try and pack ski pants, etc. in my backpack so I just wanted to know if anyone had found resorts that loan out all ski equipment. It seemed to me that May was sort of late for skiing, but I've read a bit about summer skiing in Austria in some guidebooks. Thanks for any input!

In some places in Austria you can ski on the glacier. One of these places is Kaprun, there you can ski all year round. Most people who go skiing for the first times rent there stuff in Austria/Switzerland. In most places it is possible to rent skies/boots/suits etc. (but it can be expensive)
May is late to go skiing, but possible, you have to be aware that the normal season ends late March/Early April, and that there might be a period until the summer vacations, that is used for maintenance of facilities, that might cause you some headaches (at least check these things before planning).

You'll have to go high in the Tirol for snow at that time of year as so far the season has been a little light this year. Maybe that means the season will end late - yay! Check all the things Herrbert suggested, as well as snow depth and quality before you head off on your trip just in case it's not worth it.
Somewhere in Switzerland that has gorgeous villages at the base and mountain with snow all year round is Mt Titlis. I know it's not Austria, and not sure how it fits in with your itinerary, but it's an option depending on what the snow does this year.

Thanks for the responses. I keep running accross the phrase, "year round skiing" in may areas of Austria and Switz. I'll just keep researching and try to figure out the likelyhood of skiing in early summer. The main thing I want to know is the equipment issue, since like I said I don't want to have to pack ski clothes. Switzerland is on my itinerary, but I pushed it back to mid. June so that I would be able to hike a lot. But I will check out Mt. Titlis. Thanks again guys!

GoJoel, from what I recall, this question came up in another Thread, but I can't find it at the moment.
I suspect that skiing in Europe might be a bit of a problem this year, as from what I've heard many resorts have only started to get snow recently. There have certainly been lots of storms, but these mostly just brought lots of wind. Perhaps some of our European members could comment on current conditions in their areas?
I can tell you that I was at the Schilthorn (located at the 10,000 foot level) in Switzerland in Sept./Oct. and their was virtually NO snow whatsoever. The web cams are "dark" right now, so I can't check on the current snow situation. If you're going to be there in June, you can hike down from the Schilthorn, but be careful on the first section as it can be slippery and it's a LONG way down!
I haven't skiied for quite a few years, but can't recall whether the rental shops also offer warm-up pants and ski coats for rent, in additon to the usual skis, boots & poles???
If you want some good skiing now, jump on a plane and come to B.C. - we've got LOTS of snow, especially on the local ski hills.
One other thing to consider if you're in the Berner Oberland (Interlaken, Murren, Gimmelwald, etc.) in June is that Paragliding is available in that area, and it's a lot of fun!!!
Happy travels!!!
