Travel Alarm Locks for the backpacks? Are those really worth it? I've heard mixed reviews, some ranging to highly recommended to others saying they were more the hassle than peace of mind. Thoughts?
Also, is it recommend getting a cable lock to lock up our bags while on a train or while the bag is in the hostel?

freshsprout, I've never seen any "Travel Alarm Locks" for Backpacks, but IMHO they would be a waste of money. Having an alarm assumes that someone (other than a potential thief) will be present to hear it, and also that someone will be present to take whatever action is required. Doesn't seem logical to me?
With regards to Cable Locks, I usually pack one along in case I require it, but I've yet to use it. Still, I believe it's a good option to have "if required".
I don't find it necessary to secure my Pack while travelling by train, as I usually have to stay with the Pack (however, at least snapping the pack to the railing with one of the straps will prevent a thief from grabbing the Pack quickly). If you have a travelling companion, the situation is much easier as someone can stay with the Packs, allowing you to get to the restaurant car or whatever for short breaks.
While in Hostels, I usually just lock the zippers of the Pack (one advantage of a panel-loading pack over a top-loading pack!). Some Hostels have Lockers that are large enough to accomodate a Backpack, so that's another option. It's a good idea to pack along a small and good quality Padlock, to secure the Lockers (if these are provided by the Hostels). I posted a Thread in the "Packing" section some time ago regarding features to consider when choosing a Padlock for travel; rather than re-post the information, I can try and locate it and post a link if you're interested?
If the Hostel looks a bit "dodgy", that would probably be an occasion where I would utilize the Cable Lock. However, one has to keep in mind the inherent weakesses of a Backpack, so it's not much of a theft deterrent.
Hope this helps. Happy travels!!!
