i have asked the question if people buy real maps rather than the tourist maps. but know I'm just wondering if anyone knows any kind of website that does this, i don't mean just a normal map of a city a map that would have tourist sites on it. i got one or two goods ones of rome and paris but other places are harder to get a hold of.

I would just look for the maps and brochures in train stations, hotels/hostels, travel agencies, airports and tourist agencies - they all should be free and should include maps in them.

In my experience, most Hostels usually provide a paper city map for guests when they check-in (they usually have a thick pad of maps right at the desk). The maps are usually reasonably well detailed and also fairly current.
I usually photocopy and enlarge maps out of my Guidebooks, as these show the locations of the lodgings I'll be staying, as well as the attractions I'll be visiting. I normally use standard letter size paper, with all the maps in a plastic sleeve (in my Daypack / carry-on).
Cheers!!!

If you would like the maps before you go to do some planning, then you can either head to Stanfords for full maps of the cities you require (with all the little streets marked as well as the sights) but as there's not one in Liverpool (Manchester is the closest unless you're heading to London) you could go to their website to purchase them. Otherwise, the free ones that PONR and Eagle have suggested will work well for finding your way around the cities. At a pinch, you could go to www.viamichelin.com or www.maporama.com and print off the area you needed, but these don't show the detail of all road names unless you zoom in (and they you'll end up carrying more paper than clothes if you print all of those off!).
